Trying to order subscription only from Sky

Just moved to Belgium and have the dish and a box I got from an old customer working. Rang Sky just now to try and buy a subscription (to an Irish address) and they asked for the card number that was in the box. The guy then started saying the box was a bit old and he would recommend I get a new installation etc (which I obviously cant).....
At this point I got a bit flustered and hung up while on hold! Can he stop the box from working now....What should I say when I call to just buy a sub only?

Tell them you want a second hand subscription. This is the term used when sky are not providing new equipment for a new contract the customer (you) are providing second hand equipment. Tell them that the dish and box are working fine and new ones aren’t needed. Say you got them off the buy and sell or ebay without a card and have used them for Free to air viewing for awhile and now you want to subscribe. You’re saving sky the cost of a new install and equipment. I did all of this a few years back to get RTE etc in London all worked fine and still does and Ive got sky plus. Remember all ways block your number when on the phone to sky. Good luck with it.

Can you get Sky plus on a second hand subscription, and does it need to be plugged into a phone line to work?

I had a standard Irish sky subscription before I got the plus box but I don’t see why it would not be possible to get a second hand sky plus subscription. After all your saving Sky the cost of the box. My plus box has never been connected to the phone line and has worked fine here in London on an Irish sub for the last 18 months. I just got the box off a company on the net and rang sky for the plus sub and to change the card to the new box. Hope this helps.

If you have an existing ROI card, can you just ring Sky up with the new NI address & postcode? Or do Sky need to send out a new card?

You can get a subscription without buying a new box. They prefer it.

SkY+ nor SkyHD does not need phone line to work. But a new card won't activate without phone, even though it is activated via satellite. This is to force new Sky+/HD users to have a phone line. Wheter the box is new or not doesn't matter.

A new card should work if ordered as a Second hand subscription. When ordering you will be asked if the box will be connected to a landline, just say no.

That's how it used to be anyway. Unless Sky have totally changed the way they allow secondhand subs to work. But I'd doubt it.
