Getting BUPA/VHI coverage for a treatment overseas

Has anyone managed to get VHI/BUPA to cover a procedure/treatment abroad - on the basis of it not being available in Ireland?

What are the guidelines on what is covered and what is not?
Do they have a list of procedures/treatments that they cover?
What do they generally need before they will approve such cover ie. is a letter of referral from a GP enough?
If approved, are travel costs also covered?

Obviously, I will be asking them (BUPA) but it would be interesting to get an insight from someone who has been through this process already.

There is a law that if you cannot have a procedure in the EU but can in a non-EU nation the EU will pay for it. I know the VHI limits the ammount it pays for procedures oversseas, my sons delivery was only covered up to 1000 pounds (2002) the insurance cost 1000pounds a year.

How difficult is it to avail of the principal set out in this law? ie. is it wrapped up in red tape?
Have many people gone this route?
Would the procedure have to be critical?

guy i know had to go to the UK for treatment that was not available in Ireland, he had to get his consultant here in Ireland to fill out a form and send it to vhi and they wrote to the consultant and him advising the treatment would be covered... i think depending on his plan he was covered from 65,000 to 100,000.

didn't the RTE news guy, Tommy Gorman, get his liver operation covered some where in europe as well under some cover along the lines of the E111. i know there is another name for the form that he got the treatment for, but can't remember. he did a programme a few years ago on it
