A few n00b questions regarding airsoft

Aside from a few games of paintball out in Bray, I'm a noob when it comes to the guns, but I know how they work, that they shoot paintballs, but then this whole airsoft thing, with damn sweet Sig's...

I'm wondering wtf does an airsoft gun shoot? Does it hurt as much/little as a paintball?

And finally, how much joules does your standard(Crossfire) paintball gun shoot? Just want to get my head around how fast one joule would hit you at close range (3 meters).

    they shoot these

    6mm white plastic balls.

i havent played paintball so i cant make a pain comparison. it just stings a little bit. nothing to be worried about. but sore enough to try and avoid getting shot in a game.

oh paintball guns shoot about 15 joules. i think so anyway. the vast difference to a 1 joule bb is due to a paintball being much bigger

Pain wise they don't hurt as much.
Paintball you have to wear a full face mask or you'll end up with serious lumps, but airsoft you only need eye protection to avoid going blind.

Don't get me wrong, you'll notice when you're hit (though it has happened where I have been blissfully unaware of it). Face hits will always sting that extra, and try not too get shot on your teeth or they may chip a bit.

As O1s1n said, they fire 6mm plastic round projecticles. They do not explode as in paintball.

Taking hits is completely honor based and it tends to work rather well because of the people playing the game.

I prefer airsoft over paintball because I've found airsoft to be more tactical and the weapons and equipment a lot more realistic.
Weapons are usually 1:1 replicas and because of that you're able to use a lot of the real gear especially in terms of clothing, though I know a few people that own real Eotech reflex sights as well.

Once you get over the initial set up cost and can curb your buy-addiction, it's also a lot cheaper to run than paintball.

Anyways, more questions answered than actually asked :)

i'd recommend more then eye protection too. cosmetically, walking around for a week with a 6mm bruise on your face can be a bit annoying. i had to deal with this a couple of weeks ago. i could constantly see the thing in the corner of my eye. suprised i didnt go cross eyed :D

a mate of mine gave me a pair of workman safety glasses that stop nail guns blinding you etc. they're not as hindering as googles but give really good eye coverage. blasted it with an AEG and a 1j powered sniper rifle. not even a scratch. just have to try out their fogability now :)

the realism is what really wins out for me in the end. i just love playing with guns :D

*no, i am not a gun nut..well...not a big one*

There's nothing wrong with being a gun nut.

bugger they dont hurt, unless you have gone to a proper airsofting match with more than 10 guys, each with their own gun do not say it does not hurt, it hurts like hell if you get someone with a good full auto shot with good grouping, or single shots from a good sniper who knows where to hit.

go to airsoftireland.com/forums and ask some of the guys to show some airsofting injuries, might chage your mind about the sport.

depends where you get hit really. bare skin hurts quite a bit. i can imagine a shot to a bare knuckle would make your eyes water. being shot in a clothed spot stings, but nothing a real man cant handle ;)

The lip. That's the sorest place I've been hit yet.
Happened storming up a staircase at TA2 (right after I was hit in my glasses and was convinced they had shattered - it hurt too).

I use a full face mask.
I like to keep my front teeth. :D
The mask has mesh instead of 'glass' (or whatever you call it) so no fogging.
Drawback with mask is that its a bit harder to rest your cheek on the stock to aim.

Finger nail was the sorest I got hit.
And on the knuckle, it broke the skin.

Yep TA2 and Berget 4 is the extent of my big-game experience thus far. Both great in their own way (though B4 was a bit over hyped, still good fun!).
