I want to go to Singapore and travel over land up through Malaysia into Thailand and around Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos. I'll be booking a flight to Singapore and I'll have a onward ticket from bangkok for 6 mth later. Will this cause problems in Malaysia and Singapore? Will I have to show proof on onward travel or the like?

    Any info much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I've been to Singapore twice and I've been to Malaysia about 8 times or so and have never been asked for proof of onward travel.

Whats the Stoty with visas for Malaysia and Thailand when you fly into Singapore? Also, can anyone recommend some places not to be missed in Malaysia. Cheers.

Visas on arrival in both Malaysia and Thailand. Simple process in each case and they're free.

I was in Malaysia for a total of 2 weeks during the summer on the way to and from Vietnam. Tbh there was nothing I'd say was "not to be missed".

Spent a few days in KL which is interesting, Penang which is ok and Melaka which is nice. Fellow travellers reckoned Langkawi was better than Penang. The natives recommended heading for Sarawak and Sabah which are on the island part of Malaysia but I didn't have time to do it justice.

I don't mean to sound negative about the place because I enjoyed it. The hotels are top class and the food is fantastic. It just doesn't have the same buzz about it as Thailand or Vietnam. Part of the reason is that it's a Muslim country and a lot of the tourists are from the wealthy arab countries so the nightlife isn't fantastic unless you like drinking coffee! There was a really friendly group from Saudi Arabia in my hotel in KL and I went out to dinner with them a couple of times (great Iranian restaurant but no alcohol :( ) but they weren't interested in hitting the bars afterwards. Penang wasn't wild at night either.

I'd say make a couple of short stops on the way north to Thailand unless you have loads of time to hit Sarawak or Sabah. If you're into architecture then don't miss KL. Some of the modern buildings which include elements of Muslim influence are really fantastic.
