County Reg Letters - can you choose?

Just wondering - can you choose which county is on the reg plate when registering for the first time?

Say you live in one county but register the car in another county which letters go on the plate - your home county letters or the county in which you are registering the car?

i.e. You live in Kildare but register the car in Dublin - what will be the reg, KE or D?

It goes on the (given) adress of the registered owner, i.e. Kildare in your example.

You can get around it by using another persons adress with their consent if they are in the desired county but it's frowned upon. I suppose you could always change it as soon as it's registered. (All documentation, tax, NCT etc will be sent to the given address).

(A lot of people living in Dublin but from rural Ireland use their original (e.g. parents) address when registering their vehicles so as to keep their identity.)

It was a silly idea that I had - the car is on a "D" UK plate and I thought about keeping the "D" allbeit with the 86 on the plate!
