I don't mean to be morbid or gold-digging but a relative of mine died last january and I was told they left something to me.
I'm just intrigued and don't want be ringing the solicitor but how long does probate go on for?
It's nearly a year ago now and I'm wondering how long can the period be after someone's death until the solicitor contacts you?

can go on for ages. or not. depends on a lot of things...among them

the amount of assets in the deceased's estate (cos they all have to be submitted to the Revenue),
the Revenue Commissioners attitude to the deceased (if the person died with a million Euro of assets but never made a tax return, questions might be asked),
the solicitor in question - he could be sitting on his arse doing nothing
the executor in question - ditto
disposal of assets - the will might say 'i want my house sold and 1/10 of the proceeds given to strokesfan' and until the house sells, you're not getting anything, so you've got to add the length of time for a house sale as well.

there's no definitive answer for how long anything can take. If you know who the executor is in the estate, you should ask them how things are moving on; the solicitor doesn't have to tell you - the only thing they do have to tell you is what you're getting...if you're getting anything!

The solicitor I dealt with said six months and he was right. In my case however the assets were easily determined. As posted it depends how complicated it is but generally the solicitor will have an indication. Very very slow process.

Aye - pal of mine who does this stuff (hence i know a wee bit about it) reckons that once you lodge the asset details with the revenue it's a good two/three months before they come back with the all clear. Then in theory you're meant to get clearance from the dept of social welfare (if the person was getting any class of pension) and then you go to a probate office with the docs and they take months as well...

in effect, yer man was saying that there's a bare minimum of 4/5 months wait anyway, and then it's dependent on complications...
