Where does XP save VPN Connections?

    Hi,

As the title says, does anyone know where XP stores saved VPN Connections?

More specifically, I'd like to be able to automatically delete saved VPN connections on laptops. If anyone knows of some software for doing this - great. Otherwise, I've no problem trying to hack something together - if I only knew where they were stored.

Google hasn't been much help - most people seem to want to know how to set up connections, not delete them :(

    Regards,

    Liam

It's been a while since I used a VPN, so this is from memory.

Any VPN software I have used has set up a new network connection, which is visible with all the normal network connections. But I don't think that is the "whole" VPN setup - there has to be the actual software that looks after encryption and all that.

So, first place to look for part of it is in Start->Settings->Network Connections. The second part should be some sort of software.

I am sure someone can post a more technical explanation. :)

    Thank you for your response.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my original post.

(without wanting to sound like a smart-ass) I don't need any information on what a VPN is or how and where to set one up. The specific information I need is : Where does XP store VPN connections that are already set up and saved in the Network Connections folder?

My needs are simple. I don't need to retrieve any information from the saved connections. I would like this information so that I can programmatically delete saved VPN connections from colleagues' work laptops as these are a security risk.

If someone knows of such a utility that would be a bonus.

    Regards,

    Liam

They're in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Connections along with all other network connections. It's a whole mess of CLSID's that's a bit difficult to navigate your way around using regedit. That's as far as I ever got though. It's apparently a bit of a PITA to discern physical from virtual connections, let alone VPN from other virtual connections. Might be worth Googling on that registry key.

I'll do a bit of googling on that as you suggest. Thanks for the pointer.
