New Bank Holiday

    It has been 13 years since the last public holiday was introduced, 13 loooong years! Ruairi Quinn TD has called for two additional public holidays per year. With just two bank holidays left in 2006 (25 and 26 December), this sounds like a welcome suggestion for those who like to kick back as much as they can.

    So if you could introduce another bank holiday (or two) when would they be and what name would you give it?

    In South Africa they have Youth Day, Heritage Day, Family Day and Freedom Day.

    Malta has 16 bank and public holidays - we really need to catch up!

    I'd suggest that we take on Thanksgiving as a national holiday - mainly cos we have nowt going on in November. Maybe we could make up a Saint and celebrate his birthday or something??

    Thats great news, hopefully we get the additional two days!
    That said...I've been unemployed since June and amn't in college right now, so every day is a holiday...

    I've no idea what the two new days could even be named, let alone a cause for them. Perhaps something of historical relevance in this country?

    What about celebrating St Bridget's Day on 1st Feb?
    A gender balance for St Patrick's Day & something to look forward to in the dark days of January's post-Christmas blues.

    Nothing to do with the fact that it's my birthday of course.

    No fun in that. Everyone has to be off the same time. Oh and I think they call them Annual Holidays that you can take when you want. Twenty of them even.

    National Brown Envelope Day. We could hold the events in pub car parks.

    Agreed that we need something between New Year's and PAddy's Day, but NOT of a religious significance. Partially because I don't think a day should be a public holiday AND a religious holiday simply because it's dedicated to a saint.

    How about Eid?

    Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Oh indeed we need one in November and one in January...though I guess if there are two more bank holidays the schools will take two days off Christmas/Easter/Summer Holidays tobalance things out because we have to have a certain amount of hours per year. Boo to that.

    I agree.

    Can't remember off the top of my head, but is the day we became a republic i.e the day of Irelands independence a public holiday?If not, that'd be a good excuse for a day off I guess...

    Wait, he wants 2 extra public holidays added each year? What happens when we run out of days to have those holidays on? Maybe by then we'll have invented time travel and we can start going back in time and have public holidays on days we missed!

    Halloween isn't a bank holiday. And it's really public holidays that we should be concerned about as crap like Good Friday is useless. And there are only 9 public holidays:

    * New Year's Day (1 January)
    * St. Patrick's Day (17 March)
    * Easter Monday
    * First Monday in May, June, August
    * Last Monday in October
    * Christmas Day (25 December)
    * St. Stephen's Day (26 December)

    I think it was a 'Public Holiday' and not a 'Bank Holiday'.. I don't understand what the difference is and why they aren't just merged :confused:

    Feckin banks always trying to take over everything :mad:

    Halloween was on Tuesday. The public holiday fell on the Monday as it always falls on the last Monday of October.

    Bank holidays are pretty much meaningless as you aren't entitled to any time off. It always pisses me off the amount of people who think they shouldn't have to come in to work on Good Friday.

    There has been speculation about a public holiday to mark the Easter Rising...But there are so many complex issues relating to this such as what day to have it on. Also, what about a bank holiday in July?

    What's the point of bank holidays anymore? I mean practically everywhere opens and the the places that don't...well give it a few years and I'm sure they will. If I want a bank holiday off I have to book it several months in advance and listen to the moans and sighs.

    Bank holidays have just become shopping days anyway so how about we call the next one "Consumer Whores Day".

    Emm...Easter Monday.

    What always surprised me was that the day this country became a republic is never marked. 18th April in case youre wondering.

    I wouldnt mind the first Monday in July as a holiday. Keep the summer trend going...June...July...August. Plus its nicer to be off when the weather is warm than some day in February or October/November.

    The bank holiday on Easter Monday has nothing to do with the Easter Rising. Obviously the date of Easter changes every year and the date in which the Rising began doesn't. Also, some people believe that we should celebrate the Rising on the first day the executions began. Hence the complexity, not to mention political issues, so I don't think it's as easy to say Easter Monday.

    The 1916 rising started on Easter Monday. Obviously that day changes every year but can you please tell why the 90th anniversary celebrations of the rising were held on Easter Monday this year? And why the 1916 rising is commemmorated every Easter Monday?

    The 90th commemoration was actually celebrated on Easter Sunday and in fact it has never officially been celebrated on Easter Monday. There is a state ceremony at Arbour Hill on May 3rd to mark the day the first executions began.

    What i'm saying is that if we want to have a bank holiday for the Rising, we can't really have it on Easter Monday because that's already a bank holiday.

    Oh ok...I thought it was on the Monday. I stand corrected.

    Definitely should be an official day so but as you say finding a day that everyone agrees to may be a problem.

    we should have an independance day, lots of countries celebraet independance but we dont, and we should have michael collins day, his memory is not being kept alive and what he did for ireland is not celebrated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

    Pighead reckons there should be a Thunderdome Day where everybody gets to tell people what they really think of them. Obviously the Guards and Hospitals should not get the day off. as the demand for their services would no doubt increase.

    Whys that? Does everyone's social life revolve around the pub. Not everyone spends a bank holiday pissing their salary against the wall at 1am while waiting for their curry chips in macaris.

    Ask yourself, would you struggle to be entertain yourself if the pubs were closed.

    Too many familys have alcoholic fathers who spend everyday in the pub. If it sends those punters home to their families then it cant be a bad thing.

    A bank holiday thaat encourages families to have a day out without alcohol would be a good thing

    A crap father in a family is going to be a crap father whether he is in the pub or not. This problem can be easily solved with divorce these days.

    And not everyone one has families so it's silly to suggest such a thing.

    C'mon monkeyfudge im surprised at you. Its never that black and white. So do we immediately assume that a crap father cant be fixed? Maybe there are problems that can be resolved.

    in fairness, the VAST majority of people do. Its not like we dont celebrate Christmas to avoid offending a minority non christian people living in ireland.

    A friend in work asked me about the bank holiday thing i mentioned a few weeks back and it took me a few mins to figure out she was talking about this thread

    I could not find any links and i don't pay much attention to politics and was wondering would someone just tell me what are the chances that TD - Ruairi Quinn will be elected and we will get out 2 extra bank holidays, whatever form they take.
    Looked at all the ideas here and i have to say i don't like the idea of a another St. day, Micheal collins idea was interesting and most would agree that he does deserve a day and most of us would agree that we deserve another day off.
    I don't want to get involved in the discussion of pubs closed or open because i already started a topic on that a while back, and simply put they should be open for those that do not have family so they are not sitting alone by themselves.

    I still think that this original idea of freedom day is good, as well as being from futurama you can picture a huge bunch of drunken people dancing around and singing the freedom song
    *monkeyfudge can do the honors*
    Freedom, freedom, freedom, OY! Freedom, freedom, freedom, OY!

    Well the May bank holiday was introduced by the last Rainbow government so I suppose you could say that if not just was Quinn re-elected but Labour went into coalition government, then they have a decent track record in this area.

    As regards what days - while an Independence Day type thing would be nice, that's always been traditionally celebrated at Easter time (indeed the reason the Republic came into being on April 18th was that that was Easter Monday of 1949). As many people have said, with there already being a holiday then it doesn't really make sense to make it.

    I would be happy with St Brigid's day but understand why people don't want another St day.

    Why have it for something specific? The June and August ones don't seem to have any particular significance attached to them. The rest do all have decent reasons I suppose though.

    How about a "Future reunification day" :D lol. Plan of reunification decades in advance and on this day in , so many years time be reunified.
    Or could always do a "invade/protect the north" day. Everyone gets say the 11th & 12th of July off, cept the guards and army etc, they get formed up and organise everyone and head up north to protect the nationalists from the riotin mobs and scare them marchin invaders back into hibernation for another 12 months.
    */contriversial*

    When I was younger I always wondered why there was a fathers day & mothers day, but never a son or daughter day :confused: Like all celebrate xmas & birthday but shouldnt the kids get spoilt?? :p

    Soz if resurrectin thread, hardly look here and just seen it from a link from somewhere else actually :confused:
