I'm a fan of tipping if there are dealers that i do think deserve to be tipped. I deal myself alot so you'd think i'd be in favour of big tips but for example, if I have the same dealer 3-4 times in a night and between hands he has taken 8-10 riffles, 3-4 cuts and generally is just slow i'll tip just a nominal amount because i know you should. If i think generally speaking dealers have been good i will tip well.

Playing the 50 DC in the fitz, one week i had two of the worst dealers i can remember SLOWLY SLOWLY dealing, then another week I had one of, if not the best dealers i have ever had in the fitz. Suffice to say i'd tip very differently had i won substantially on either occasion (im not very good ya see).

    but...
    €500 - 20

    €1000 - 20-50

    €2500 - 100

    €5000 - 150

    €10000 - 200

    €500 30

    €1000 50

    €2500 100

    €5000 200

    €10000 3-400

3-5% is standard, A smaller % the more you win. I left 400 on an 11,800 3rd place finish in Barcelona.

10% too high. its tough enough to break even playing tournys in dublin... let alone tipping 10%!

    I think 4% is a good number.

I think between 3%-5% is good enough. Recently, I won £10,000 in the Broadway Casino in Birmingham (after a deal was done) and I tipped (what I thought was the dealers) £300. More than enough you would think. Turned out that it's illegal for dealers in the UK to accept tips and I had actually tipped the waitresses £300! I was wondering why they were being so nice to me...

    nice one, lol

reminds me of that famous story about the druglord (Jimmy Chagra) in Vegas in the 70s who tipped a waitress $10k for bringing him a complimentary bottle of water!

I think I am an overtipper, especially in the Fitz at the lower levels.

    500 - 50

    1000 - 100

    2500 - 170

    5000 - 300

10000 - no idea, but probably around a monkey

I'd imagine that the most i'd tip a dealer is €50 -€100 no matter what i won... i mean, i'm the person playing the cards not him/her. Fair play if they're a good dealer, i'd expect them to be good at their profession!

Just looking for opinions..If you pay into a big event, say €3000+200 reg and you finish in the minor placings and pick up €3500, how much should you tip?

You are only making a profit of €300 but 3-5% of the payout is €100-€175.

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

Nothing in general. Only tip for the top 2, maybe 3 positions, unless maybe in this case where you make a big profit for 4th or 5th due to satelliting.

I definitely tip too much, but I generally don't care if I have. If I've had a good night and the tournament was well run I'll tip very well. I tipped $150 for a $2800 4th place at caesers and the poker room mamanger nearly choked. But I wanted to leave a good tip because it was such well run tournament and he was brilliant to take the time to sort out my tax forms.

I think anyone who provides a good service and works unsocial hours to do what isn't an easy job deserves a nice bonus for their efforts, and I'd suggest that anyone who doesn't believe in tipping, try working 12 hours through the night having to stay focussed all the time, handling large amounts of money and dealing with some not very nice people. Then try telling me you don't want your tips.

I wouldnt noramally tip unless i have made over 1 K profit or had a top 2 finish and then 3-5%
i also do not tip every time
I won an event in Cork where i took down 1900 for 50 stake and left nothing as the dealer on final table was very very rude

in cash i tip every hand above 10 bbs except split pots and keep an eye on the rake been taken out and vary my tip on that

There is absolutely no doubt that dealers and cardroom staff deserve to be tipped both after tournaments and after individual pots during cash games. I consider myself to be not too bad with the aul tips. I would go about 5% - though if I had got disinterested or slow dealers during the course of a tourney I would make it less. This is correct IMO as the tip you leave should be some reflection on the quality of service received.

but did you know that (apparently) the people who deal the final tables in the Fitz tournaments don't get paid for the last few hours the final table is on, and rely on the tips as payment, If a dealer is slow, overall it does not effect the game as much as a dwell up for no particular reason by some players. I tip a dollar a pot in cash games, and depending on the pot size it can go up to €15.

Some people tip the standard €1 no matter what size the pot is which is fair enough. Everyone to their own.

Who told you that?? That was not the case when I worked there and I'd be astounded if it was the case these days!

Luke handles tips very well and splits them based on hours worked in the tournie etc. and also remembered to pay me some €25 in tips 6 months after I'd earned them (they'd been sitting in an envelope in the office waiting for me but I didn't remember/remind him about them)

this isn't true, and those who deal the final tables in the fitz also get a slightly greater share of any tip left (at least that was the case when I last worked there 4 months ago, would be very suprised if things have changed that much).

This is an interesting one. I also vary my tip dependant on the size of a pot and always tip at least €1. It annoys me when you get guys that never tip. And it amazes me when someone takes in a pot of €800 or something - and throws a €1 chip the dealer's way. Ye Gods man - could it not be a €5?

    I go with that approach

and I will abuse people who don't tip....in a friendly way of course

(but then I also abuse people who don't put in their compulsory blind raise as well :) )

Is my thinking here wrong? What do dealers think? Would you hope for an increased tip on a bigger pot?

If everyone is tipping 1euro a hand thats fine - if its in a place where dealers get to keep their own tips you're talking 20-30 hands an hour. Nothing wrong with that and the better/faster dealers will get paid better. If I notice people arent tipping when Im playing Ill make a big deal of tipping a fiver making sure everybody knows that they should be tipping. I wouldnt deal for less than 20euro an hour and think thats fair enough - its a high skill job with unsociable hours.

Absolute rubbish about final table dealers not getting paid, the only thing I can think of is that theyre missing out on earning half decent money by dealing a cash game.

heard a good one recently ,secondhand of course about a player "the weather " (clue) he used to be a dealer years ago that left a generous tip for the dealers in a decent size tourney and the dealers had to play a freeroll for it ...................he wasnt happy and wont play their "events " (clue) again

Was in Vegas last month and played a lot of 1/2 NL in the MGM.
I was amazed at the amount of people who didn't tip or only tipped every few winning hands.
For a country that runs on the tipping culture it was more often than not an American who was not tipping.

Nice poker room by the way, with some daily tourneys with decent structures.

That's rubbish about final table dealers not getting paid. If anything they get paid slightly more because they tend to get a larger share of the tip.

Oscar, I very much doubt there is anyone dealing poker in dublin cash games who averages 30 hands an hour. Pity.

In tournies, I tip 3-5% of my profit. I tip every pot I win over 10, and usually try to tip 1% of big pots.

Sorry, I was mis-informed. I thought it sounded strange alright, ( alway just assumed that tips are put in a big bundle and split amoung the dealers, otherwise there would be a stampede to deal the bigger tournaments (bigger payout = bigger tip) and no-one would be deal the round of each tournie on a Saturday night:p :p LMAO.

The dealer on the final table might have been rude, but how were all the other dealers you had during the tourney? Truthfully, Id be embarrassed to win a tourney like that and not tip the dealers. I normally leave a tip of about 6%-7%(not of profit but of actual figure). Dealers have a tough job with very unsociable hours and deserve to be looked after.

TIP? I ASK the TD if I win or get 1-2-3. He tells me the normal and I pay up a tiny tiny bit extra (to appear generous of course) .
Then:) for cash games, I pay up whatever LILY says I have to pay up.

Yeah 3-5% is good, and I only tip if I've made a decent profit on my original buy in. I'd never tip if I just got money back or just over it. I think once I'd doubled my original investment I'd start tipping, and probably only on the profit that I'd made. For example if the buy in was €1000, and I cashed for €2000 I'd only leave €50 or so, but if the buy in was €1000 and I cashed for €10k I'd leave about €400- €500 depending on the dealer standard, what mood I'm in etc. For a smaller profit I'd lean closer to 5%, but would never go over. For a bigger result I'd lean closer to 3%. In Barcelona I left €1000 out of the €41,000. It's slightly less than 3% but the dealers are doing the same job even though the prize money is bigger. Maybe it's a little scabby, but all they gave me was €500 notes and I wasn't leaving them €1500! I'd very rarely tip less than 3% though.
