Amp question

    Hi,

I just installed a car amp and sub. On the amp there is one LED, with "Protection Power" beside it. The light is illuminated blue when the stereo is on.

Just wondering if this indicates a fault?? Or is just a power indicator? There is nothing in the manual about this. Its a mutant amp/sub from halfords btw

    Any ideas?!
    Thanks

Does it have any other 'power indicator' light?

I think maybe that the light has a dual function - Power and Protection. Blue for power and some other colour for protection? Just a thought.............

    No, just one light :(

Yeah it could have a dual function, you'd think it might say something about this in the manual!

Agreed - you'd imagine that there would be some mention of the protection feature.

Which amp is it? Mine has a blue light which illuminates all the time to indicate the power is on.

The model number is MTPK12-A as far as i can tell, its a cheap €150 one....

It seams to be a power indicator alright, but why does it say "protection power" beside it?!!

    Did you wire it yourself?

Is it the first time running the system or has the light just come on for no reason?

If its in protect mode and first time running theres a problem with your wiring, could be speaker polarity or power touching ground or vice versa

If it just came on suddenly then chances are something internal in the amp has gone pop

Yeah i wired it myself( 1st time ;) ), first time running also.

If it was in protection mode, surely the amp would not work? Turn itself off??

Is there any output from the sub?

Do a quick run thru of how you wired it,also did u use a specific amp wiring kit?

Yup the sub works fine :) Well, i havn't had much time to test it, but it is working.

Wiring it, 12v from the battery to the amp, Ground to a metal bit in the boot( posible not the most secure, might have to look at that again) the REM from the stereo to the amp and the RCA cable also.

Then just one cable from the amp to the sub. The wires came with the amp and sub (was a kit)

Could ground not connecting properly affect it?

Wiring seems fine, just try and find a nice bolt and make sure the metal under it is bare and all's well there.

If the subs working fine you shouldnt have any worries and the amp most likely isnt in protect mode.If it was you would have no output at all from the sub.

The led may possibly change to red if in protect and stay blue powering normal.Im not too familiar with mutant amps, just make sure your gain isnt up full whack on there and likewise with bass boost
