Next time you hear it clicking give it a good smack with your hand or off the table. Mine was the same and this seemed to resolved the startup issue for a while. It's starting to happen every now and again but the same things corrects it each time until it eventually gives up the ghost altogether.

Don't bother with yer man on adverts. He doesn't even reply to his requests for ipod repairs.

Yeah, I emailed him and he hasn't replied. I know, a friend fixed his iPod by dropping it from the roof! Why are they so crap? I hope the Zune is more reliable.

Yeah I believe the ZUNE is bomb proof and "drop from the Empire State Building" proof too !!! Get real, iPods like most players of it's type use mechanical hard disks which don't take kindly to being dropped - smacked etc.

OP, what version iPod do you have ? There are plenty of places online that sell spares - drives, screens cases etc.

I recently bought parts for a 1st Gen 5GB iPod from an American company called PDASmart.com. They support all iPods.

Had the parts within a week of ordering and they came with the tools needed to open the iPod and full instructions. There are plenty of other companies that do this - Google is your freind !!

As you said youself, Google is your friend so use it to find many people out there with an opinion contrary to this (the smacking but that is).
Think of the hard drive clicking being similar to an old LP record skipping, a smack on the unit itself helps the unit read the bits it was skipping on.

Are you extracting the urine here ??? Smacking, dropping or otherwise exposing the drive to shock will cause the head to hit the platter and cause more damage than was there to begin with !!! The result is the same either way - a new drive will still be required.

He's not taking the...I had a similar problem in that my ipod was showing a "sad face" icon, warranty was out & repair was gonna cost more than the a new one so read a few forums & they said smack it or drop it...had nothing to lose so let it drop & it's been working grand fore the past few weeks??

Yeah, it worked for me for a while as well. Do you really accept that your €300 piece of technology can break and the way to fix it is smack it off the table. Apple are a shower of kunts

Smacking technology has been a time-honoured fix for decades. I have "fixed" many appliances in this way. So many problems are due to loose connections. It's also quite satisfactory TBH.

As others have atested to, I'm not taking the piss.
Every so often my iPod is not recognised by my laptop or desktop and the clicking noise continues until I give it a quick smack in time with the clicking and hey presto, iPod get's recognised and connects.
I know it's not a long term solution but it's worked for me for the last few monthsm otherwise I wouldn't have been able to update my iPod.
