Hi, i'm second year engineering, and i've been told that i receive an ordinary degree in maths too when i graduate?!? Is this correct? Also, do i actually receive a physical certificate saying BA in Maths, or is the degree in engineering just considered to be of ordinary degree level in mathematics?

    cheers,

    stephen

to the best of my knowledge you recieve both, though your ordinary degree in maths isn't going to be worth alot, other than just getting to say it on your cv...

Oh, it's purely for show, my brother did engineering in DCU, and he's rather upset that i'll have two certs on the wall, compared to his one. It's a sibling rivalry thing. He's doing a masters in advanced engineering, so that'll make him superior over all. It's from DIT, so i'll have to get a masters in engineering from TCD and then I'll finally win.

only 4 years to go so.......

You get two degrees, a B.A. (undenominated, you are entitled to this after 3 years - though I think it used to be designated as a B.A. in Maths) and the B.A.I. (honours degree, get this after 4th year).

As was said, it's the same as getting a B.Eng or whatever from elsewhere.

    Conferring of degrees

21 Students who have obtained credit for the four years’ course are entitled to the degrees of B.A. and B.A.I. Both degrees must be conferred at the same Commencements.

Students who complete the Junior Sophister year by examination and who choose not to proceed to or fail to complete satisfactorily the Senior Sophister year of the engineering course may elect to be conferred with the ordinary degree of B.A.

Except by special permission of the University Council, on the recommendation of the appropriate school executive committee, the ordinary degree of B.A. may be conferred only on candidates who have spent at least three years in the University.

    Voilà!

So all the bull**** we were given by Dr West was a load of crap!

At this stage I dont really care but I know a few people who would've dropped out at 3rd year if they knew that was true.

It's possible that it only came in over the last number of years. When did you graduate?

    I graduate in 2004.

I friend of mine did Mech and realised that he didnt want to do it at the end of 3rd year. If he could've dropped out with something he would've.
