PCMCIA sound cards are available alright. What is wrong with your onboard sound? Maybe some of us can find a solution. There might be an option to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS menu.

I just get a crackled sound out of the speakers, iI have done a fresh install of windows xp and a reformat of the drive, I was looking in bios and as far as I know it cant be disabled from there, there is no option for it that I can find  so if someone here can give me some help it would be great.

Even if you cannot disable the on-board sound you can tell windows when using multiple sound cards to only use specific ones.

In the control panel->sounds and audio devices->audio tab in here set the default sound card of choice and tick the box to only use default devices.

As for the crackling no idea to be honest but if you've done a fresh install it does look like it may be hardware related.

Check out either of these PCMCIA or USB sound cards if no solution is found.
