Surprised no one has been discussing this yet. This article if from last week.

There has been some official information released to the press last Monday from a Galway consortium with close links to CityJet.

It's understood that the consortium have been in contact with UPROAR (Portmarnock group opposed to the new runway at DUB) to get their support for the project.
    E1.5b airport plan for Lusk
Rogerstown Estuary, which will be on the flightpath for the proposed new airport runway, close to Lusk.

    By Hubert Murphy

HUNDREDS of acres west of Lusk have been earmarked for a new E1.5b airport runway and local terminal to service Dublin Airport.

The runway project has gathered momentum in the past two weeks after approximately 10 landowners were approached and asked if they would sell to those behind the project. The main backer is reported to be a wealthy Irish businessman.

The Fingal Independent believes that the landowners concerned have since met and discussed the plan and are set to make a positive decision in relation to it. It could involve up to 1,500 acres.

The land involved is close to Grace Dieu – the ruined site of an ancient nunnery – and sweeps westwards towards Ballyboughal between the townlands of Roscall and Brownstown and Dooroge and Cookstown.

‘It’s quite a project and it’s surprising that details haven’t gone public before now,’ a source revealed.

The runway will be designed to take the Airbus A380 with no difficulty and can also be used as a private enterprise.

The key element is the link with Dublin Airport. It’s envisaged that it will be a high speed rail system, connecting to a spur off the Metro line at Lissenhall. It will come down west of the M1, through Belinstown and Staffordstown before sweeping through Deanestown to the terminal.

Another plus for the developers, who are keen to keep the project low key until a deal is struck with the landowners, is that the approach to the runway will be between the town of Rush and the village of Portrane, directly over the Rogerstown Estuary and a low density population area, meaning minimal impact on the local population.

‘Things have been well thought out, it has to be said. They know that the landfill at Balleally is closing and the approach route is not over a major town,’ the source added.

The area is the last parcel of flat, suitable land in the region that could take the runway. However, it will be just a matter of miles from the proposed Nevitt landfill but will not be on the projected flightpath.

‘They are looking ahead to the future of air travel and realise that Dublin Airport will need another option and this is about the last place a runway of the size they need can be built in proximity to the airport,’ the source continued.

It’s believed aviation experts have been called in and given a firm thumbs up to the plan.

Just over three years ago landowners just north of the present project were contacted in relation to selling their land for a proposed theme park – Vega City – with one standing to make at least E26m had the deal gone through.

However, that project fell at pre-planning stage.

Thats the first thing I thought of. I wonder if the high speed rail link will be a mono-rail.

I read that in the Fingal last week Bluetonic but I took it all with a pinch of salt!

Edit: Wrong name used in post!

There is a lot more about it in it this week, names and details etc..,

I presume it will like moving the port to Balbriggan, a load of bull****.

Still..... new prison, new port, new airport, new dump, new incinerator.... is there anything the Fingal region has left to aspire to.

Just like the EuroDisney type theme park which was proposed west of the M1 near Colecot.

Has that not opened yet? I spotted a lot of caravan setting up next to the M1 at Bollough around 10 months ago, presumed they were the 'carneys'.

Its a good idea to build a 2nd airport for Dublin, but its in the wrong place. The infrastructure around Dublin Airport is already stretched, so why add more load to the M1. It would be much better to turn Casement into a 2nd airport, and extend the LUAS to it, that way the traffic is more evenly spread on different roads entering the city.

This project though sounds like a load of rubbish. They will probably insist that 100,000 apartments are necessary for the building of the airport.

I never understood the argument for a second airport instead of making the first one "good". A replacement airport maybe but not a second. It's a pain in the ass for the people who use the airport and need to make connections.

Airspace in the area could get very tricky I would think, especially if Dublin 16/34 is retained.

Baldonnel would be a closer to most people, especially from South Dublin / South Leinster.

Then again they could link the new runway in Lusk with an underground, like the terminals in Heathrow.

Dublin 16/34 seems to rarely be used. If it was tricky for take offs, the collision point would be over Oldtown village!

Ireland needs a Midlands East Airport IMHO.

    North West Kildare area perhaps?

    Hi all,

as a resident of west Lusk I can tell you this has been on the burner for a while now, and was mentioned again at a Lusk Local Area Plan meeting last week.
The Vega project was a red herring from the beginning; everyone could see that.
This 2nd airport runway actually makes sense. Heathrow, Schiphol and Barcelona all have very similar set-ups, and runways were added to each one of them in the same (disjointed) way. Any frequent flyer with a Heathrow phobia (like myself), will be especially familiar with Schiphol, where the internation runway requires a 25min taxi (a plane-taxi that is! :P ) from the terminal to the runway. Sometimes I wonder is it actually in Holland at all :)

Its clear a lot of thought has been put into it, and all the correct types of people are involved. Expect to hear more, but a pinch of salt required as always, until someone on government (or the DAA) level makes a comment.

very interesting all the same! Nice to see huge plans like this every once in a while (Bertie Bowl, Port Tunnel, Outer Ring Road around Dublin, 32-story tower in Ballsbridge, etc).

How seriously can this idea be taken since the airport doesn't appear on any development maps or anything?

Right now, everyone is is treating it the same way as Vega City, but in this case, it is probably a little bit more than just a pipe dream. The city council don't make decisions in a hurry, so expect years of planning.
