Anyone done the PBP before? Anyone considering doing it this coming year?

(I do get these mad schemes in my head sometimes)

Excellent thing to aim for - don't forget that there are some entry requirements as far as I know (don't you have to do one of those crazy randonneurs brevet series in the same year to qualify?)

Sure do - gotta do a 2, 3, 4 and 6 :) Sounds a bit crazy but so be it. Long distance equivalent of an Ironman or something, at least it's relatively self-paced, within the time limit.

I would suspect it is a _fair_ bit more difficult than a single Ironman; certainly it's a hell of a lot longer! It's a completely different class of event though, you complete an Ironman within a single day (PBP time limit is 90 hours!), and PBP isn't technically a race.

Harriet Fell (wife of Sheldon Brown) has an interesting account of cycling it in 1975. Great thing to aim for (personally I'm aiming for the Wicklow 200 next year :))

I think you'd want to start looking at audax bikes if you wanted to get into that sort of thing (you cycle an extensively modified Trek mountain bike tourer IIRC, although I seem to remember you were getting something else?)

    I do - Surly Cross-Check spec here.

Ah yes I remember reading about your plans for the Surly. Nice bike! Brave man with the double though 34 doesn't sound too bad.

It's not bad at all, it's a "compact". Apparently a new idea (!)... I figured an approximate range of 32 - 112 gear inches which suits me just fine.

Trojan, have you done any long distance events before? Check out Paul O' Sullivans account of his last p-b-p and the dates for the 2007 qualifying events on www.sorrentocyclingclub.com

No events. I've done some 150km rides and plenty of loaded touring with decent daily distances (100km +). I realise it's going to take some serious training, but I'm not overly concerned with my base. The mental test will be tougher.

I've read Pauls account, also Harriet, Sheldon's wife, and Machka's. Also Rose Leith's account from a longer brevet somewhere in England, saw that one on Sorrento site.

My first training will be this Christmas, with a couple of trips to Mayo :)

I did it in 1991 on my 1957 Higgins trike, really enjoyed the athmosphere in that time I think there was over 30 Irish.

I'm aiming to try PBP, not this next one coming but the one after that. I do not have the bike or the legs to consider next year's! But that's what the next five years will hopefully lead up to.

Fair play Greenman, Trojan. It's a massive undertaking.

Edit - i thought this was a one-in-four event, not annual?
