Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm planning an uber-shopping trip to Newry very soon, and I was wondering what's the best type of thing to buy up there, or what have people found to be a lot cheaper up there than down here?

like the above poster said get the crates of beer.
i posted special offers in beer, wine and spirits last nite on the thread of the same name. make sure you go to curleys beside dunnes stores in newry, their prices are great, sainsburys in lisburn is also pretty cheap for drink.
but remember they only sell 440ml cans up north, not 500ml like you get down here. like i said in the other thread im going up again on friday and im going to get as many special offers in the off licences up there and post them here.

dont get guinness draft up there.
comes in a weird two thirds size pint can.
takes like chemicals and gives dodgy hangovers.

are they that much cheaper up there?
superquinn have 24 miller longneck for 21eu
    thats £14.
add in petrol and time spent and newry would want to be pretty cheap if you ask me.

i got 20 cans of guinness for £20 in sainsburys (440ml) and as a daily guinness drinker i noticed no difference in the taste, its canned here as well. i go up north twice sometimes more a week so its not really an issue for me saving money on petrol.
spirits are where the big savings are made

I won't be doing it again.

ive had it twice in the past year,
and have been a guinness only man for about the past 4 years.

i can honestly say that i didnt believe the first time that it was guinness i was drinking it tasted so foul,
the second time i drabk about half the glass before finding a convenient spot to hide the glass.

i dont know how anything about the northern stuff but its not the same as whats in the cans down here.

Its worth comparing prices in the argos books from north and south. Not sure if it still goes on but some things used to be cheaper in NI even after converting euro to stg

VAT is lower in the north, hence the savings.

I've been to Newry a few times but latelyI don't think the savings are that great.I find that now the Irish Multiples (Tescos Dunnes etc) are lowering their price on drink and groceries e.g. they have alot of buy one get one free etc.I recently bought 20 bottles of miller in Tesco for €16.49.Now you wont beat that!

Litre of Smirnoff Vodka is €29.35 in the south. Same litre up north is £15,35 (€22.90) in Sainsburys, it's with spirits that the savings are to be made. Around xmas the price of litres of spirits goes down to £13 or £13.50 so even more to be saved especially if stocking up with all your xmas drinks.

Hubby has been stocking up on the miller and that offer was in the 3 Tescos in my area.

In my hubby's case I don't think he's making any savings with special offers because if it's in the house he'll just work his way through it. The odd bottle here or there soon mounts up or not in his case:rolleyes:

The Tesco offer for the miller was last week or the week before.

Did a run last year and got caught out badly by not checking the sizes of bottles and cans.

I got a "bargain" 24 bottles of Bud for something like €15 only to discover that they were all 250ml vs. 330ml here. Same with the rest of the drink I bought.

So one tip, check the sizes of bottles and cans before you purchase. I'm not convinced it's really worth it, TBH.

If buying lots of Spirits it might be an idea to fly to Barcelona or Germany or someplace just overnight ... Get a cheap Ryanair flight ..

Spirits are roughly half the price there, and theres no restriction on how much you can buy as its EU.

That's not entirely correct, anything over 8 litres and they can ask you to prove they are for your own personal use. Not sure how you would prove it besides opening a bottle of spirits on the spot and downing it :D

Thanks all for the advice, I'm just back for a pre-Xmas shopping trip up there. I had great fun up there playing "Spot the Dub" - usually the ones with a trolley groaning with cases of Millers and Bud.

I checked out the Buttercrane and the Quays. Definately Sainsburys have some great deals on spirts, especially the well known ones, Southern Comfort was £13 stg for 750ml. They had a couple of my favourite Belgian beers going really cheap (Duvel and Leffe).

You'll be at a loss trying to get any of the more 'exotic' spirts and liquers, Jagermeister was no-where to be had, and I even checked out Dunnes off-licence and Drink-Link.

Groceries on the whole weren't a hell of a lot cheaper. For example 2 Litres of Pepsi Max was £1.15 in Sainsburys and it's 92c down here for the same.

Besides the spirts, the only other big thing you'd save on up there on is toiletaries, especially men's disposable razors - they're about 1/2 the price they are here.
