Got a letter today from NTL:

"As an existing ntl digital and broadband customer we're delighted to tell you that our triple play services are now available at your address [Knocklyon]. So now you can get ntl Phone - one line, one bill and one great way to save - all for just €10.00 extra per month!"

The beauty of triple play is that you don't need an eircom phone line or a sateillite dish. In fact, because of our independent cable network, we can offer you a phone line for just €10 per month compared to €24.18 from eircom. We also offer very competitive call charges.

    blah...blah

    Offer ends 24th November.
    Subject to a 12-month contract.
    T&C apply
    "

No other details about call charges in the letter or on the web site...

So that's €10 line rental before call charges? The existing VOIP providers don't have such a charge and offer various call packages for €10. Admittedly you'll probably need to cough up for an ATA so that you still have a real POTS experience like I'd imagine NTL would be offering.

Finger on the pulse there NTL ...

Or maybe they're not utilising VOIP at all but something else that runs directly over the copper.

No copper here, I had my number ported to Blueface last year.

    Sorry. Meant the co-ax copper.

They also gave a 1800 number to "call now!" for a "free connection", but it just rings out...

So €10 per month is an introductory offer?

The lack of information makes me wary of this service.

Abit strange there's no further info anywhere else, normally such a rollout would be mentioned on enn.ie, same as it would for any other company

As well as broadband, UPC Ireland is also concentrating its efforts on accelerating its voice service launch; it currently has voice-enabled 24,200 homes, although to date take-up has been relatively slow with just 300 voice subscribers by the end of September.

This figure should grow significantly over coming months as the company concentrates on an "aggressive" roll-out of its triple play services, according to Dunn. He reckons the company's triple play product, which includes a voice element, has gone down reasonably well in new developments such as Adamstown in Lucan, County Dublin. Dunn was quick to point out though that UPC Ireland is not confining its triple play offering to new housing developments.

The first residents have now begun to move into the Adamstown Castle Development since the beginning of October 2006. It is expected that the first phase of Adamstown Castle c.300 residential units will be occupied over the next (4 - 6 months).

People have only started moving into Adamstown a few weeks ago. So what he's saying is that the triple play product has gone down reasonably well with a small handful of people. Doesn't sound fantastic does it?

    Anyway, time will tell.

Got the same letter here (Firhouse) - the freephone number is 1800 94 94 94. Absolutely no details of what you are getting for your €120 though, and nothing about their call charges either. Won't be rushing into this one.

I rang the 1800 number last Thursday and finally got an answer. The guy in the Waterford call centre just wanted to take my name and number. I said I just wanted to know the call rates, but he insisted all he could do was take my number and someone would ring me back after 6pm. Still waiting, though technically I suppose it is still after 6pm (last Thursday)...

I got a similar response from Chorus in 1996 when I asked about their services. I didn't give any contact details because I reckon they just collect contact information which they can later use to market new products etc, to people who haven't signed up with them.

Looks like things haven't changed much.

Still, I'd have expected them to chase up potential customers without much delay.
