If you taking a car from a test drive from a garage, you should be covered under the garage's own policy, providing someone from the garage is in the car with you.

If it's a private seller, the car needs to be insured in their own name with an active policy before your own insurance party's third party extension (if present) will kick in. In this case you will need to check your insurance policy for a line that goes something like:

"Any vehicle being driven by the insured providing the insured has the owner's consent and the vehicle is not owned by the insured or subject to a hire agreement".

If you're unsure about this ring your insurance company.

you can also do a temporary transfer of your own insurance if the private sellers car is not insured. I thin you can even arrange it so you can tell your insurance company to temporary transfer your insurance from 9.30pm to 10pm:)
