Hello there, just a few questions. I have family members going to the U.S. tomorrow and was wondering if I should commission them to purchase me a digital SLR in america or should I buy over the internet here? Is there a big price difference? I was thinking of either the EOS 350D from Canon or the Nikon D50. Also are the names different over there in case I do get them to buy one of these cameras. Thanks for your help.

huge price difference especially if they don't declare it to customs on the way back

the canon 350d is called the canon rebel xt in the usa and the newer and better 400d is called the xti

Thanks alot, is there much point going for the XTi over the XT? economically wise, funds are tight.

I was in CA last month and the Canon 400d, Nikon 80 and Sony somethingorother were all about 25%-30% cheaper in the USA.

Actually, if you walk into best buy in america, they'll know 350d more than the rebel XT. Don't ask me why. Mine is marked as an XT, though. When I was in Galway, I seem to remember being shocked at the prices. And that was before I thought about exchange rates.

That said, if your family member will be there for a few days, order it online instead of from a retail store. Best Buy is offering the camera for $800. Newegg.com has it for $650 -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830120030 . The black version is $50 more for some reason. Newegg ships to anywhere in the US in about 3 days.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but apart from having to use an adapter to convert the power for the battery charger is there any other disadvantages to buying a camera in the us. For instance if it gave trouble what's the story with the warranty. Should be there in a few weeks, and there is a saving of about €400 on the Nikon D610.

Warranty won't cover you here. I was told that the lens has a worldwide warranty but the body is country or region specific. So if you have a problem it's either take it back to the shop it was bought in or pay for repairs from your own pocket. I got caught with this when brought a Nikon in Asia and it broke on the way home :(

Was it faulty or did it get damaged? and was it costly to repair?

I'd go for the Canon 350D.

I was thinking the nikon because I have the D90 at the moment, so all my lenses will fit. Is it worth changing brand when I already have the nikon fit lenses?
