Custom charges on Playasia orders

Two months ago I ordered two xbox360 games from playasia.
I then recieved a letter from the good people in Irish customs asking for approximately €24 in charges.

Do people recommend ordering one a game at a time at play-asia? Some people were posting that Customs don’t check packages with a value less then €50.
So it may cost more to in postage costs to order games one at a time but it avoids getting stung by Customs.
What do people here do?

Yes order seperatly. I've never had a customs charge with over 30+ items from them in the past.

Also €24 is bull ****, simply refuse to pay it, dont respond.

I once got a demand for a piece of memory I bought from Ebay. on the customs docket they put down it's value was $40 and yet the customs sent me a letter asking for €28?? I simply thought ****em and didnt reply. I've not heard anything since...

do they hold onto the goods until you pay the charges tho?

They held me package with two games in some depot in Clondalkin.
Also, they said I had ten days to pay or the package would be returned to the sender.

I didn't manage to make payment by this 10 day deadline, I phoned them as asked them not to return to package to Asia.
The customs officer officer stated that the 10 day deadline was "to frighten people". His exact words.

So I had to pay up as the only other option was to break into the depot.

I don't blame customs, they're only doing their job. But I'd like to avoid dealing with them in future so I'll try ordering one a time from now on

My mate bought an I-River mp3 player from america a few years ago, as it was a good bit cheaper then the same version over here. He got it shipped to a relatives house in america, who then shipped it to him, marked as a present. It took ages to get to him, casue of the two postal trips, then customs picked it up (don't know why, didn't think you could be charged customs on a present....) and all in all, by the time he got his hands on it the proce of the irish version had come down below what he ended up forking out!

Only ever got one item with play asia so not sur ehow they ship stuff,
But with play.ocm they ship all items indivdually packaged even if part of the same order, is it not the same with play asia?

I think this situation only occurs when the product comes from outside the EU such as Asia in this case
THey can't impose a tax of EU goods or so I understand from my limited knowledge of EU Law. (VRT aside:) )

Play.com orders come from the UK afaik. Could be wrong

no play.com and playasia are different.

I have been ordering For both places all the time. Playasia its always best to order one at a time. I got stung once and got lucky another time as i had used a coupon for a refund i got so it brough the price down.

Play.com is based in the Uk so there should be no customs charge no matter what way they send the package not sure why the send them one at a time.

A friend of mine also rang about a charge on an item he bought from playasia and in the end they sent it to him no charge. not sure what he said to do that

AFAIK customs base the value the object on Irish prices. So even if you got it for less if the RRP in Ireland is higher then that is taken as the value of the goods. I have heard of a few people getting stung by this.

I think they claim to be based in Jersey in order to get around some other charges as well. How many companies do actually have their main depots based on that island though is another thing and it probably just a PO box number that they have there.

I think you mean me Yeah I got a letter in the post asking for money for 2 games which were posted seperately but they accounted for them as one order. I sent off an email and phoned the girl who's name was on the letter and had it sorted.

I've ordered 6 games in total from play asia, all seperate and never had a problem, a lthough ive ordered two call of duty 3's seperatly one for me and one for my brother, hopefully i don't get stung on that, they're both adressed to my house, shoulda really sent one to his!
