I stuck this question in the E240 thread but thought I'd give it its own and see if anyone knows the reasoning behind it.

Why are companies that use numbers to identify models not useing them to match engine size. Or more to the point, why do they do it with some and not others.

I mean merc have the S 500, 55, 600 etc. These are 5ltr, 5.5ltr and 6ltr engines , yet as in the other thread the guys fathers E240 is a 2.6ltr.

BMW aswell with their 316 that isnt a 1.6 ltr. Whats the point?

EDIT. Just checked. Merc have gone all over the place again. The S500 & 600 are both 5.5ltr and the 320 cdi is a 3.5, whereas the 350 is a 3.5ltr.

I was just about so Say the S500 and S55 and 600 aren't as simple as 5L, 5.5L's and 6L. Depending what year the car is also, The engine size varies.

Another perfect example is the E200 Kompressor and CLK 200 Kompressor, They uses a 1.8L Supercharged engine. I guess the name E180 K just doesn't go down well enough for the mercedes employees.

    A few BMW examples :
    316 uses a 1.9L engine
318 uses same 1.9L engine with more BHP
    320i (E46) uses a 2.2L S6 engine
    323i Uses 2.5L S6 engine 170BHp
    325i Uses same 2.5l S6 engine 190BHP

The newer model BMW's on the other hand, Seem to be using a more standard Model / engine Size badge.
    The 116i Uses a 1.6L
    320i Uses a 2L 4Cyl Engine ( Zzzz )
318i Actually uses the same 2L engine with Less BHP again.
Ok So mabey not as standard as I thought they were :P

Saab do it as well. The 9-3 1.8T actually has a 2.0 litre engine.

Incidently BMW have recently introduced a 316i with a 1.6 litre engine.
