    A Chairde,

    Was wondering :

When the Consumer Unit is being replaced in your home, how is the ESB Line to the Main Fuse neutralised during install .

Do ESB have to turn it off , or can electrician do it himself .....

    Again, just wonderin,

It's worked on when it's live a lot of the time. Not too dangerous for someone who knows what they are doing.

ESB can be switched off - there is a small isolator on the meter in the ESB meter box

What is it with dodgy electrical advice on this board?

OP, purely FYI: "Neutralising" as an electrical term has a different meaning to the one I assume you're getting at, as in de-energising?

Anyway, not all installations have an isolator, which as well as serving as a boundary between the ESB's equipment and your own, also allows the electrical contractor to easily de-energise the tails feeding your ditribution board/consumer unit in order to carry out alteration.

Chances are, unless you've extended, your installation is not new enough to have an isolator anyway, in which case...

...they should request a temporary de-energisation from ESB Networks on 1850 372 757.

A completion cert should not be required, unless the installation, as a whole or partially has been altered. At least, I wouldn't request one.

I am beginning to wonder if there are any electricians using this board.

    1. Nuetralising is carried out in the meter cabinet and is an electrical connection that is extremely important to the earthing of your house.

    2. A qualified electrician is competent enough to work live on a distribution board change out in a house.

    3. A completion cert is an absolute must for this type of job or any large electrical job in your house. Ensure that the electrician actually tests the installation. The tests required are, Earth Loop Impedance, RCD test, Resistance of Protective Conductor and Insulation Resistance Test. These will take him about 45 mins after power is restored.

    4. If you want to do the job right from start to finish, you should have all water and gas pipes bonded to the main earth as well and a new rod installed.
