Processing Credit Card Payments using Broadband

    Hi There,

    I was wondering if anyone can advise on how to use my broadband in my store to process credit card transactions. Currently I have the credit card terminal with the RJ11 cable going into it.

    The customer swipes the card, dialling.....wait wait wait wait wait.....approved.

    Is the some website I can visit or software or advice that someone can give about connecting my terminals to my broadband to quicken the transaction time?

    It very much depends on what the payment terminal vendor offers.

    In general, most payment terminals in Ireland do not support a direct connection to the internet via broadband or other technology. Instead, the connection to the authorisation host is via PSTN (phone line => RJ11 connector), ISDN or more recently GSM etc... especially for a small merchant as opposed to say a large retailer.

    There are a few options:
    1. Ask the payment terminal vendor to adjust the terminal settings so that more transactions are authorised offline i.e. not by remote auth host. Such settings include floor limits, etc...
    2. If it is the dial time that is slowing the transaction, then ask the vendor about always connected solutions where the solution is always connected and does not need to dial up.
    2. Find an alternative vendor - note that in Ireland different Banks/acquirers use payment terminals from different vendors. Probably best way to do this is to talk to people in a similar business to yourself about their experiences.

    And of course complain to the company that supplied the terminal and see what they can do for you.
