Operating system not found!

    Hi i dual boot windows and linux,
    however all of a sudden whenever I try to load up wndows the screen crashes,
    linux works fine,
    when I try to go to setup menu by pressing f4,8,12 forget which one so i pres tehm all I get the message "operating system not found"
    any ideas of how to fix this?
    do I have to re-install windows?

    Try going into BIOS (del, F2, something like that) and set the options to default, if that doesn't work then try out below.
    You could try using the recovery console in Windows XP setup before the reinstall, have you still got the installation CD?
    At the Welcome in XP Setup screen press 'R' to open the Recovery Console, it will bring you to the command line and then type fdisk /mbr.

    With the way microsoft have it set up, that could cause you to not be able to get at the Linux install.

    What distro are you running? You can install the NTFS drivers for Linux, so that you can browse the windows filesystem to see if theres an error there.

    Has anything changed? Did you install any software or do anything out of the ordinary?

    Were you using GRUB or LILO or what 'menu' came up to offer you Linux or Windows at boot up?
