STTs and a students bankroll.

The main problem with being a student poker player, infact the main problem with being a student full stop, is the lack of money in the wallet.
Most good games are out of our reach. I rarely play in any of the clubs about town because I can't afford to.
I've dabbled with on-line poker because they have micro (student friendly) limits. Playing 2c/4c or 5c/10c is kinda frustrating as players are pure donkeys. And this frustration leads to bad play on my behalf which leads to losing. So I turned to the €1 STTs. 9 and 6 seat, reg or ectended, no turbo, so speed. And here i was making a little bit of cash. Bit i was think if i cleared my €50 bonus, I could move up a level or two and play poker and hopefully do better.
So im playing some micro cash games, and STTs. Trying to clear bonus and my money is probably dropping slightly.
I put on $20. Had $12 when bonus cleared.

So with my $62 I move up to the $3 STT and give cash a break. I'm cashing about 50% of the time. And as of right now I am up to $115. Its been about 2 weeks, but i wasn't playing much as I was in Holland with college. I counted on the history and its been 37 games @ $3. With a few $5 4table games.

So i got to wondering, when should I move up a level. Should I base it on 50% ITM, or X no of buy-ins.

    I was thinking of 20xBuyin +/- 2Buyins. So for the $5 games. I start playing at $110 (20+2), and I stop in I fall below 90 (20-2).

Are these ranges right, should I wait to move up. Or should it be based on play over last X number of games as well as bankroll.

    Advice please

I think 20 buyins should be fine. Heres a handy tool that will keep good records easily

ROI (Return On Investment) is important too, 50% ITM is around the usual for a decent player i would think, 20% ROI would be a good level but it needs to be judged over a longer period of a couple of hundred STT's. As long as your ROI is in the 5%+ region your bankroll will be fine and you should move through the levels quick enough.

I know 20% ROI isnt much when your playing at the lower levels but if you make your way through the levels upto $50 and your only hitting 10% ROI playing 100 STT's a week then your netting over $500 per week, more if you get a good rakeback deal.

I found going back through hand histories after each game i was Out Of The Money and looking at the crucial hands that lost me alot of chips and writing a note into the above spreadsheets improves your results because you begin to see a pattern of where your making mistakes. Good to root these mistakes out early on.

Im not playing STT's that long though so im just going by other posts ive read

    Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I think my ROI is about 30-40%. But its too small a sample set.
I'll keep count of my games from now on. To try get accurate figures for return. I was thinking of keeping earning records as well as % records. 20% at $5, will earn me more than 7% at $10.

I too am a student and I always stick with the 12 buy in rule, I started off with $5 sngs and am now playing $20 sngs, ROI (for me anyway) seems to decline slightly as you move up the levels, probably as the gap in poker knowledge/skill decreases between players.

I think 40% ROI is probably unretainable at any level though.

A good way to build up a bank roll is to clear bonuses. If your playing on Tribeca, open a Neteller account and try clearing the bonuses on different skins. They all offer decent sign up bonuses, reload bonuses etc. I think they tend to work out as 80% rakeback which can definitely help you out.

    Just my 2c

i mainly play stts and i always make sure to have ten buy ins minumimum for a certain level. In my opinion there is not much of a differnce between 5,10,15 and 20 stts. the higher u move the better the standard. I would suggest building your bankroll to a high level at what level your comfortable before moving up. There is no point moving up when your short and need to cash say within 4 games you are better having 10-20 games grace to become comfortable at a new level.

The bonus I just cleared at PPP was a 200% rakeback. Won't get many of them about.

If this is inapprioate please remove.

These bonuses are still available at tribecca.

    bonus - Points req - rakeback %
    $500 - 100,000 - 50%
    $101 - 10,000 - 101%
    $50 - 2,500 - 200%
    $20 - 1,000 - 200%

i used the $50 bonus, as it would of taken me forever to clear the 100,000 points on a student friendly budget. And the 50 was a better % than 100. Figured I'd get it 4x times as quick and could use it to build a bankroll.
    God i need a job.
