I was in New Zealand recently, and went to the Monteith's Brewery.

I tried most of their beers

Does anyone know what Black Beer is?

It certainly wasn't stout, and I loved it.

Also, their Celtic Red was nice, as was the Original Ale.

The Radler, a Lemon and Lime beer, was nice, but just too sweet to drink a lot of.

Are any of the Monteith's range available in Ireland?

When I think Black Beer I think of Schwarzbiers I've had in Germany. It's more like a really dark lager, kinda toasty-malty flavour. I love 'em :)

    Hold on...

There's one definition. Your Monteith's one could be of another dark lager style on that page. Although if they make Radler they could be following Germen styles. I've never seen Radler outside of Germany. I quite like a Radler on a hot summers day. Kinda reminds me of a shandy though :)

Yup, probably a Schwarzbier :) I googled Schwarzbier and got the Beer Advocate list, the Monteith was at the bottom of the list: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/627/4590

An excellent, informed reply Adeptus Titanicus, thank you for that.

Sorry to ask more, but is there many available in Ireland / Dublin, you say you "love 'em" - do you get them here.

I'd love to try some more.

    Hmmm,

I'm sure I've seen Köstritzer around somewhere, but I can't remember where. A bit sad, but I just rang Redmonds in Ranelagh and Malloys, and neither have any Schwarzbier. I have a feeling I got some in the Vintry, a little off license in Rathgar village, but that would have been almost 2 years ago that I was in there.

    Sorry (hangs head in shame)

I was almost gonna ask my other half to bring some back with her as she's returning from The Fatherland tonight, but she'd kill me :D

Koestritzer was tasty stuff alright. My local in Germany used get it in on a seasonal basis.

I had Monteiths in NZ a few years ago and I've kept an eye out for it since with no success. You could try the Aussie/Kiwi bars maybe? There's one next to the Cinema complex in Parnell Square and they do Speight's so maybe they'll have it?

I lived off the stuff in my time in NZ, I loved it, a nice hearty beer. The Celtic red is also good. also good however is the TUATARA porter brewed in Wellington. lived beside the brewery/pub :) happy days. As for speights, not bad in small measures.

And how could I forget the gorgeous Monteiths Winter ale, 6.5% nice cinnamon spice to it, kept me warm during the winter there :)

    I wasn't a big fan of Speight's at all.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions people :)

Agreed Speight's is nothing special. The point I was making was if Speight's is being stocked there is a chance that Monteith's might also be available.
