I'm off to Prague in 2 days (yay), but I've haven't been abroad since I had an operation on my spine, during which metal pins were placed in my back to hold the aul spine in place... so now I'm wondering if I'll set off the metal detectors! :D

Has anyone had a similar experience, if I set them off, should I just explain and will this result in a full cavity search! (*grin*)

I'm sure they'll just wand you. Last time I went through a metal detector, I had a wallet full of coins which was embarassing. The time before that, I tried to walk through with my bag on my back.

Can you get a medical cert from the hospital?

If you google it you'll find lots of articles and discussion about this subject. Apparantly it varies with the metal used, the number of implants and the setting of the metal detector. The advice seems to be to tell the security staff before you go through the detector and to be ready to show staff your surgical scars!

My mother went to the states a couple of months ago and didn't set off the detectors in Dublin or various airports in the states - she has 2 plates and 2 lag screws in her ankle.

my bf has steel rods in his back from spine operations. The first time he went away he got a letter off his doctor explaining incase they went off. To date he's been abroad about 20 times and they have never gone off...
