Bring back Ronan Collins!

So... Laura Woods has been chosen as the new face of the Lotto draws...

Ronan Collins, been doing it for nigh on 20 years, always does a professional job, now gets shoved aside for a blond young wan.

Which begs the question.... is this on? Why was Collins shunted aside, when really, there is no need to? Is it ageism? Has he suddenly become incapable of doing the job?

I've a feeling the papers might run with this....

i really do despise that persons presenting talents, they are minimal. i sometimes think she only got the job at RTÉ because daddy plays golf with someone high up in RTÉ

    Ronan Collins however is flawless

All to do with the re-launch (as it were) of the Lotto and probably some half arsed attempt to appeal to that most lucrative of age brackets, the 18-34s, who may well tune in to cop an eyeful of the lovely Laura and who in turn might think that maybe playing the lotto more is a good idea.

The only flaw in the theory is Ms Woods herself really...

Gotta wonder if it's RTÉ pulling the marrionette strings here or is it the National Lottery calling the shots....I've come to confuse the two entities over the years...

Lets look at the Lotto draw...

"Hello and welcome, tonight's jackpot is €x, here's the KPMG bloke, and lets start the Lotto Plus 2 draw... call out numbers... Lotto Plus 1... call out numbers.... and now for the main Lotto draw.... call out numbers.... get the results on Aertel or on the news later, here's the numbers in order, until the next draw, bye bye!"

4 minutes max. Now the content of the draw has not changed at all... so we get, in effect, a "dolly bird" to present it. I see no cause for the change. Its purely for eye candy, and not in terms of if the other "old, less svelte" person is unable to continue.

Ronan Collins presented that programme for years, but such as the professional he is, he made each draw sound like his first.

You forgot the occasional pout to the chorus of "phwooar" at home from all the lads.

Let's take something positive from all this however; at least they didn't use Shirley Temple Bar...I'd sooner have looked at Collins in drag...

Apparently, the decision to retire was partly Collins' own.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2091-2438008_1,00.html
“Ronan did 2,000 lotto draws and there was always going to come a time when he was going to move on,” said [Dermot] Griffin. “He indicated that, at the right time, we should look at the situation. We both felt this was the appropriate time. If we didn’t do it now, when the next opportunity for change would be we don’t know. So it’s worked out well for both ourselves and Ronan Collins.”

My only problem is the new games that we can play.

    What new Games?

New set and new presenter, sin é.

If it is the case that Collins went of his own volition, then this thread is entirely a tribute to him and his twice-weekly balls coverage. :D

But we haven't heard from him directly, the Lotto chief quote there leaves it open to interpretation was he gently ushered to the exit. The National Lottery was looking to freshen up the whole game... Ronan might say something tomorrow. I'd hope so....

i dont like the new set its too like telly bingo (not that i watch it, its just whenever i visit the gran it seems to be on) and i miss the 'good evening ken,..good evening ronan'. i always dreaded the thought that that shirley temple bar might present or that we might make a national holiday of the lotto draw like the brits have and its getting close to that.
the old dark, dull and ugly set was cool, it was just about getting the draw done and thats it.
    ahh.. the old days

Oh, thanks J.R.HARTLEY, you've reminded me of many "great" RTÉ productions (Talk about a Pandora's box of memories):
    - "Murphy's Micro Quiz-m". The highlight of many a Sunday night :)

    - "Ah stop de lights dere Bunny" - Quicksilver.

    - And a good old proper Irish quiz (Pre TnaG) - "Caoga". If memory serves, it was Snakes and Ladders done as gaeilge. Quality, quality TV.

    Ronan Collins is gas.
I happened to go to the RTE proms during the summer and he was the announcer. His pulled off so many jokes flawlessly.

Never mind bringing back 'Play The Game' (long, repressed thoughts of Twink and Derek Davis throwing mad shapes! *shudder*) or 'Bosco' or any of those programmes. I say bring back 'Anything Goes' with Aonghus McAnally and his odd-coloured shoes and the original "RTE M.I.L.F.", Mary Fitzgerald! ;):D Oh Mary, the things you used to be able to do with an empty washing-up liquid bottle, a couple of cardboard toilet roll tubes, a few pipe cleaners and a lump of 'mála'!

    I think I need to go have a, ahem, "lie-down" now! ;):D

Yes, a 'lie-down' on some psychiatrists couch!

    Having said that, I would.

But she's probably pushing on to about 108 these days. Aonghus is now a highly paid exec in RTE. Obviously the ability to wear odd-coloured shoes and to turn up in Ballydehob with an OB unit and a guitar of a dewy Saturday morning are considered to be valuable assets to a career in senior management in RTE.
