I have been offered a 1974 Range Rover , got classic tax on it , can get classic insurance , but been told it is excempt from test as it is over 30 year old .
Is this the case as it is a 4x4 and not a car ?

Yes - AFAIK the rules are no different.

I agree. To my knowledge, ANY vehicle over 30 years old is exempt from the NCT and DoE tests.

If it's less then 30 they can't test it anyway.........the brake testing machines can only test 2wd cars - either front or rear, but not all 4 ! Ha!

ummm, that just means they can't do the machine brake test, they still do the rest of the test and they're supposed to also do a behind the wheel brake test on the road (probably just in the car-park)

and also only for full time 4wd vehicles

I agree with that statement from what ive read and experienced

Still cant find anything definitive on whether 4x4 is Doe excempt after 30 years of age

Yes it is exempt. I have a '73 Range Rover. 42 quid tax a year and classic insurance. No NCT. Everyone should have one - :) It's great.

    gn3dr,

Any chance of a pic or two of the Range Rover ?

It would be nice to see a few classic 4x4's pics on the site.
