    Hi,

My preocessor and motherboard died last week so I'm looking at buying a new desktop. I was wondering if you could help me.

I will be using i as a home pc, for college products, and for multimedia work.

Some examples of programes I'll be using are AutoCad, Solid works, Microsoft office, Adobe Premier, and a few other design programes.

I have no idea about all the different proccesors anymore, it was grand when there was just P1,2,3&4 but now with all the different core duo and Pentium D preocessors aswel as the grothin popularity of AMDs Im totally lost.

I would probably be looking at a dell but would consider other brands.

    Cheers.

If you want to buy from Dell you wont be getting the best value for money I would think but the Dell Dimension E520 range should do nicely.

The current CPU's are the Intel Core 2 Duo and AMD Athlon 64 X2 both are dual core CPU's so great for multi-tasking, the Core 2 is generally the faster of the pair. You'll also see a Pentium D listed don't bother with those.

The only suggestions I would make from buying from Dell are tick the box for operating system re-installation CD they don't give that to you by default. Also tick the box for the Windows Vista upgrade offer again then don't tick that by default.

Make sure the systems comes with 1GB of RAM, 2GB might be worth going for if the apps you use consume a lot of system memory or you run them at the same time.

Don't bother with the Dell suggested anti-virus software after you get the system use Avast or AVG instead (free & better).

well depends on how much ur spending on the pc. if i was u, just sort by amount of ram - ud want 2048, get a 256 graphics card, and a good processor - the dual core ones are the best nowadays. Depends on what hard drive u want aswell. Id get a smallish one, and upgrade it myself

For all the above, ul find a pc on the outlet store for about 800 euros or maybe a little more.

I think that website is really hard to use, just kinda awkward to find things that I need, and I would also prefer something new as opposed to refurbighed or ex-demo etc. Was just wondering what 8T8 would consider recomending for better vaue for money.

Dell up to 1200 Euro, ankerman or self build after that price range.
