Does anyone know, what would be the equivalent of boards.ie in the UK - a popular, well-rounded, forum for chat on a wide range of topics, that would be used by both men and women?

Very few I would guess, most would be either male or female.
Hermaphroditism is not not nearly as common as you might think.

Do you have linkage to prove that outlandish claim?

The more general Rule of t'Interwebulator has a clause that allows exceptions, provided proof is shown.

Their main focus is on Television and media though. It's not as broad as boards.

I was just going to post almost the exact same thing:) Its good if you want TV stuff, celebrity news and similar stuff. The closest they come to Boards is in their General Discussion and Advice sections but overall its not as good or wide ranging as here.

You might also ask us islanders how many still dwell in the sea? Oh, on topic? Did a little surfing (on the web, not in the ocean) and found that the Brits lack the charm of boards.ie.
