What's the best anti-virus software?

What is the best anti-virus software?
I've had a Norton subscription for the last five year, but the new service does not include Windows ME.
A few times on radio show's I've heard them recommend Norton/Symantec, Mcafee and a free anti-virus software package, whose name escapes me. Any ideas/recommendations for Windows ME?
By the way, I'm not going to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. I might was well wait of Vista or buy a new laptop.

    Thanks.

AVG has a free edition as does avast! and Anti-Vir (I use it), a few boards users including myself use one of those. They work well and don't hog your system like Norton does.

    Best: NOD32.
    Best Value: AVG Free :)

Avast works for me, and is free!

I'll second NOD32. Symantec/McAfee uses up too much system resources, in my opinion.

Used McAfee with W98 OS. Nearly drove me mad as it seemed to take over and interrupt programs.

Now using AVG free version and it is very user friendly.

Anyone know of free firewall ?

Limited with Windows 98 I think, no support for it anymore. Sygate Personal Firewall will work fine and perhaps some versions of Zone Alarm.

Kerio firewall is also free, its in the essential software thread at the top of this forum.

If you are buying Anti-virus NOD32 is the best...

If you want free anti-virus I like AVG and its the most user friendly of the few free ones I have tried..

And while im at it Spybot search & destroy is a very good, free program for finding and deleting, spyware and tracking cookies...

And... Zonealarm is a free firewall thats easy to use :)

Used Norton/Symantac on W98 and the system did not like it at all! It seemed to take up a lot of system resources. Changed to AVG and this seems to do the trick. Also use Zonealarm & Spybot, both excellent, and free!
Now use Norton/Symantec on other PC running XP and it is really good, stops no end of crap.

Outpost is a free firewall that's very good.

As for AV - I use NAI and I've never had a problem with it for system resources. I'd never use Symantec again - total resource hog. AVG is excellent too with regular updates.

Check out the sticky for more.

Norton is woeful, always causes problems and slows a PC down. Never liked Symantac either. I've stuck with AVG free and its been fine. I'm trying NOD32 at the moment and I find my applications are much slower loading than with AVG.

Thats not normal! Its written mosty in machine code and should barely put a dent even in older systems. Did you talk to Eset support?

Don't really have the time. I went back to AVG Free, it seems to be much easier on the system. I'll have another look at NOD when I'm not as busy.
