Can surface piercings be permanent? Like the nape, if it was done by proper procedure and with correct jewellery and good after care, could it be permanent? Or is it enevitable that it will reject...

    Thanks in advance

i wouldnt say its enevitable, it depends entirely on how the piercing is done and on the persons body, but alot of surface piercings dont reject, just the majority of them.

    Surface piercings

Rejection is basically when the body starts to reject the piercing. The piercing is, for want of a better word, pushed out of the tissue through which it is placed. Because of the nature of surface piercings, if your body decides to view it as a foreign object (which it is) it will grow it out. There's probably an easier way to explain this but it escapes me at the moment.

Well, I was told by one piercer that there is on average a 25% chance of rejection for surface piercings. I don't know how accurate that is but your chances of keeping the piercing are obviously better if it's done properly and cleanly and the correct jewelery is used. Any piercer I've talked to has told me that surface piercings are essentially temporary but I've heard of people who have had them for years. The only problem with rejection is that you'll probably be left with a certain amount of scarring but if it's something like a nape piercing that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
You're best bet is to talk to a qualified piercer but be careful when it comes to surface piercings as you'll want someone with experience in performing them.

I had a sternum piercing for a couple of years whihc had no signs of rejection. It depends on the shape of your sternum as some people have a more flat one then others so this will aid to helping the piercing stay. That said most surface piercings will rejected given enough time.

Any girls/women out there with sternum piercings actually? I'd be interested in getting one done but I'd be worried about the scarring that would result and I'd think it would be a bit more obvious on a woman than on a man.

another option would be a microdermal, dont know if anyone in ireland does em yet though. maybe look into it, im considering try to get one done maybe

My opinion on microdermals is they'll turn out to be aload of bollox no one i've spoken too has gotten them to last that long, there's not enough drainage in the type of insertion being done and one knock/ bump and it'll dislodge the jewelery. Their gonna go the way of flesh stapling imo

What kind of scarring were you left with after your sternum piercing, amazingemmet?

I took it out before it started to reject so i've only got two tiny dots from the exit points.

On a side note just found this on bme today. That new jewelery looks interesting gonna try source some and see how i get on will post pics when i get them.

I had two sternum piercings, at the same time in a V shape, they both rejected, it was due to the amount of movement in the area around them, which is why it is way harder for women (large chested esp.) to heal them properly. I also have my nape done, which has shown no sign of migration or rejection and thats there about 2.5 years now.

I got keloid scarring on my chest and now have 4 pretty noticeable scars left. I had them for about 4 months before I gave up on them and took them out. Thats not to say I wouldn't do it again if a new proven procedure became available, but surface piercing, no, not in that exact area. I might consider getting them higher up the chest area where there is less movement,

Ill try to get some pics of my scars and piercings up later.

Its mainly from the jewelery they're using any other jewelery i've seen that people have tried to uses has just been shoddy/ not well thought out. Only one way to find out and thats to self experiment. The thing I'm more interested in is the healing as while the procedure is fairly simple they're gonna heal like a transdermal which brings up a lot of other issues that a normal piercing doesn't have. Like most thing this will flare up with people offering the procedure before its even fully understood. A case of only time will tell tbh

Yeah time will tell alright, hopefully theyl be a success

I had my nape done- lasted me six months before it got snagged in a club one night, and I removed it once it began the rejection process. Up until then though, it had been fine, I found it less troublesome than most of my other piercings because it's pretty out of the way and shouldn't get interfered with too much.

Mine was done in Snakebite in Dublin, I find them really good, they take a lot of time to get the piercings done and custom-make their own jewellery. I'm looking to get it redone soon.
