hi every1. can please someone clear this for me?
if i have a amd dual core speed 2.1 and im editing a video does this mean my pc is working at 4.2 on a single application???? or im still running at 2.1 but i still have another processor that i could use for different application?

would it be worth it getting a X2 to run single applications???

    thank you very much

a dual core processor. say a conroe, e6600 @ 2.4Ghz.2.4Ghz is the speed of each core, the total speed of the chip is 4.8Ghz. also, an X2 is kinda ****ty compared to the newer chips, like core2duo's and core 2 Quad coming soon.

now, regards the 'single application' thing, it really depends does the application cater for x amount of cores/threads. if the application is just using one core, than the other core is left unused. if the program takes advantage of dual core than the second core is used.

U can tell each prog what core to use if needs be, so u can leave one core to edit vid n use the other core to play a game etc.. Works really well

I wouldn't start going around saying X2's and AMD dual cores are ****ty just yet. They might be ****ty in benchmark scores compared to c2d but the S/W world still has a way to go to fully utilise their capabilities, heck we still run a lot of 32bit programs, let alone use both cores.

as regards whether running one program would be better with dual cores it all depends on the program your running, if the program has support for dual core technology it will utilise both cores, otherwise it will use only one and you can do what unklerosco said and set the affinity of the second core to be used with a seperate program.

Also it is a common misconception that you will infact get double the rated clock when using dualcores, due to limiting factors such as memory bandwidth, etc, you will usually get less than this at best (i.e. a 3Ghz single core is still better than a 1.5Ghz dual core)
