did any of ya see the vid and interview with Benny The Jet?

I am guessing few on here even know who he is, and what his rep was as a fighter.

I guess in my day this was to me, what MMA and UFC etc is to alot of the lads on here today.

This was as good as it got for us back then!

He was some fighter..... must be in 50s now...fought last when he was 40 and beat a top japanese kickboxer.

I think his sister won a full contact kickbxing title aged 50!

Benny is a Mass going Catholic and with this cousin and former pro kickboxer "Blinly" Rodreqious rasies alot of money for poor kids etc.

i had a quick look at the video. it had no sound so i didn't hear the interview. compared to the muay thai video it wasn't that impressive.

That brought back memories. Benny has a reckord of 58 - 0, 49 by KO.
He comes from a fighting family, both parents were professional fighters. He is of native american/Spanish background. He started boxing as a peewee and graded BB at 14 ( very rare in 1966 ) and started to compete. Has appeared in some good fight scenes in movies esp Wheels on Meals and dragons forever and Grosse Pointe Blank
He was a fast, powerfull, all action fighter.
Apparently he got the nickname the Jet from his habit of performing summersaults when he won similar to a fighter pilots victory role

    benny rocks!

I remember watching a really old video where he got a guy against the rocks and landed a sweet back kick, the guy just dropped straight down, sweet ko. Once I land one of those in MMA (and no doubt I will) I'm retiring!

LOL! Benny fought leg kicks too, don't worry about that! and bare knuckle no rules too.

Look at the combos he works with punches and kicks esp on the 2nd fight, against the bigger japanese. "Got out the axe and start chopping" he said! Magic!

    thats a pure inspiration!

    Read this...http://www.wakoweb.com/wako/bennyurquidez.asp

In fact his last fight at 42 was full leg kicks.
"Coming out of retirement in 1993 at the age of 42, he again demonstrated his unique fighting style, defeating Yoshihisa Tagami the 25-year-old Japanese World Welterweight Champion to win the World Light Middle Weight Championship. "The Jet" is the longest reigning World Champion of all Professional Sports in history."

Benny beat every single Asain champ, Thai and all. In fact if you heard the sound track he was saying, the wanted him to wear Muay Thai shorts, and Benny refused to fight unless we could wear his long pants.

His speciality was jump spinning back kick, I saw some great clips of them destroying lads with this.

If you were able to hear sound on the discovery channel clip, it appears to me the Asians though he was an under dog and would get killed in the ring.
They tried to put the fear up them and he said "should I care"

I actually got some training vids from him back home from mid 80s and back then he was kicking with the shin.

I think he is an amazing fighter.

and just for the fun of it.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhXwPQU1iNo&mode=related&search=

here is another from same era Jean yves Theriault, World Middle Weight Professional Full contact champ for 15 years undefeated. I trained under him for a year approx 1993 when I lived in Ottawa. He fought Rick Roufus who later was k1? I watched him train for that fight, and he was so focused when training, the gym was as quiet as a church, and if a bomb went off Jean would not have broke his concentration from this bag work or whatever.

I was a student then, and was training more or less full time, and Jeans trainer began to take an interest in me, however I returned to Ireland, where I had to work and the was end of that! :-(

I saw him fight Rofus in Montreal, Rofus beat him but Jean was 40 ish too! a pure champ, and a full professional.
