Help With Obscure MP4 Player...

    Hi guys,

After 30 days in the lost & found, I've been given an unbranded MP4 player.

(Well, I mean the device was in the lost & found, not me... ;))

    http://www.ex-audio.net/shop/images/mp4_sv15666_256_ad.jpg

I've ascertained that it's 512MB and the closest I can get to a model number is "FY 666", although there's likely to be a few different ones. It appears to be manufactured in Hong Kong (and judging by the content, owned by someone who can at least speak Mandarin!). Unfortunately, there's very few sites with info on it on the web.

Here's the deal: It's locked! :) Well, in some capacity or another. It switches on, displays a little welcome screen, displays a padlock, then displays a "Bye Bye" message. There doesn't seem to be any way of inputing a password or code (in fact, it doesn't even prompt for one), so I'm guessing it may be locked to a particular PC or something similar.

Anyway, what I'd like to do is flash the device with the latest firmware, in a hope that I can get some use out of it. It mounts as a normal removable drive, so I should just be able to throw files onto it. In its existing state, I can used it as a portable flash drive, but it'd be nice for watching video podcasts on the go or something similar!

Does anybody have any advice, suggestions or opinions on this little curiosity?

    Cheers in advance!

Is there a hold button, my iriver shows a lock when hold is on, there might be a button on the side of the player or something

Cheers for the reply, twty. There's no hold button, just a latching ON/OFF switch. What I meant by 'locked' though is that it appears to be device locked, not just input locked... If that makes any sense.

Unless there's some kind of "Hold down Play while you turn it on" sort of unlock or something, but that'd be a bit strange.

I wouldn't bother, its a piece of ****. Maplins sell them, it's one of about 20 different generic "MP4/MP3" players that all look different but all use the same software. I used two, and both were faulty within a few days, terrible players.

I'd recognise that software screen a mile away.
