I recommend you buy a second hand set of irons locally.
This way you can test drive them at a range no problem.
Also you don't pay postage. And if you want to sell them on afterwards you're not likely to be out of pocket too much.
I had a look in the buy and sell to see what there was. The best value name that I recognised was Wilson Deep Red. 2 sets for €180 and €220. These should be negotiable as I can't imagine too many people buying clubs going into winter.
A quick look at one site with reviews of same would suggest they are a good club (I play with Mizuno irons so can't personally vouch for the Deep Red but Wilson are a good name).

Build your set around the irons. Someone is bound to have an old bag lying around. Then go get a putter and maybe invest in a nice second hand 3 wood/driver/both and you're good to go.

    Ended up buying these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160048086987
They were just soo cheap (€115 all in) I could not justify spending 3x that on somehting else. I'll let you know when I get them.

Jesus that's some deal! I'd still maybe go and get a half-decent second-hand driver/3Woods to replace the one in the bag which maybe wont be great? I dunno though.

Going to upgrade my irons this winter. Will be looking at the most affordable option as well. Have graphite shafts but think i'll go back to the steel shaft - never felt totally comfortable with the graphite. they wer ekinda the fad at the time I bought em.

My current clubs have graphite shafts, but the new ones are just steel. Not sure if its going to make much difference for me.

Some good articles on it here:
