New to Cash Games - Strategy?

    Hi Lads,

I've been playing SNGs and MTTs both live and online now for about 2 years. I love the game and I've read everything I can to help my tournament play. SuperSystem and the Harrington books were really useful. I remember reading SS about 2 months after I'd started playing and cringing as he described weak/bad players and realising that that was me. I'm glad I started reading and studying after 2 months rather than 2 years. I'm looking to start playing cash games now. NL 25-50c online and as cheaply as possible live. Can any of you advise on how to adjust from general tournament practice (as advocated by Harrington mainly) to playing cash games. Or can you suggest any good books?

    Thanks,
    Zup

It's taking me far too long to get used to cash games. I'm a tournament donkey.

My biggest mistake still, is deciding that I'm likely ahead and trying to take the pot down there and then. It's not about taking down pots. Survival is not important in cash games. Getting value from your opponents when you are ahead is.

Have a search on the boards Forum, it will bring up loads of useful posts made from players in the same situation as you find yourself in now.

    My advise is this.
    - Be patient, rome wasn't built in a day
    - User Poker tracker and PAHUD to monitor your game and your oponents
    - If you find playing 9 Max a bit boring, then move to 6 max
    - Use good BR management skills. 20xMax Buyin, and feel comfortable at the level you choose. don't try to be superman playing a level thats too high for you (even if .25/.50 is too high)

I started playing cash games recently, and was playing .25/.50, but loosing a max buy in of $50 was a bit stingy, and eventually led me to playing incorrectly. So I changed to 6 max .05/.10. It hurt dropping this low, but since I have done this I've steadily made money each time I've played and confidense and bank roll are growing also.

Best of luck, enjoy searching through old posts, there are some gems out there.

    what about books? any suggestions?

The only book specifically for NL cash games is Sklansky and Miller NLHE Theory and Practice: http://www.amazon.co.uk/No-Limit-Hold-Theory-Practice/dp/188068537X/sr=8-1/qid=1162548268/ref=sr_1_1/026-7065641-3138036?ie=UTF8&s=books

But if you're not playing that long, then you mightn't get much out of it, and it might just make your game worse. And if you're not keen on the maths side of things, then maybe you should avoid it for a few months until you get settled in the games.

So for reading, I suggest you go to the 2+2 SSNL forum, and read the links in the stickies/faqs. There's a wealth of advice there that will get you comfortable in the .25/.50 games in no time.

    Edit: link is http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=ssplnlpoker&page=0

Edit 2: Just realised you're playing a couple of years, so go ahead and get Sklansky/Miller

Steve Davis plays a bit in the Fitz when he is around. I sat in an Omaha game with him - he said he wanted to learn it. This millionaire had c.€125 in play and just watched. Maybe one €1 call per round, no action in the blind or on the button. Think he called once for a fiver and made one flop bet in c3 1/2 hours. He left with c€120. Cheap if time consuming lesson on the game available.
Try that. For less than €10 per hour you can sit in Fitz €50 Tex and toss away "unpremiums". Stay out of trouble and just learn. God bless you if you have the patience but it would certainly compliment books/study of theory to get a practical view of the type of live game you are most likely to end up in.

    IMHO:)

Hey Handsfree, if you could find them, it'd be great. The Gholi post is brilliant.

You know Harrington is writing a multivolume book on cash games at the moment.
