According to apple, they have fixed the random shutdown issue with a software update.

Now they are reccommending this update instead of taking in macbooks for repair....

Since installing the update Ive not had a problem... So far so good...

Ill write back if anything changes..

    It's a firmware issue.

Which is a subset of buggy software I suppose...

I believe it just keeps the fans operating at a higher rate, thus keeping it cooler leading to less crashes.

also there are some instances where the wires connecting the fans have melted - this will require new fans installed.

I've been reading a lot of success stories on Macintouch, from people who had the issue, and the updated firmware has 100% fixed it. Our own MacBook thankfully never had any problems, so obviously I can't comment from personal experience, just reporting on posts I've read on Macintouch.

I've also been reading that people have reported that originally their MacBook's were fine, and problems only began after a previous firmware update.

If anybody here has the problem, please apply this and report back.
