Just put a brand new motherboard and CPU into my machine but when I plug my Zen MP3 player it tells me that i need to plug it into a USB 2 port? They should all be USB 2 though. Ive installed the Motherboard CD but nothing has changed. Any ideas?

Whats the make/model of the motherboard? You could try going to the manufacturers website to get the latest drivers and see if that does any good.

you probably want to check that you have the latest drivers for your motherboard and if their is a driver for the zen then check that too. Short answer but probably the first thing to try. - beaten to it :)

Try here, I had to input the model number into the search box to get those. I think the USB ones are under 'Other'.

Check in device manager to see if you have any unknown devs etc.
I've had a few occasions where the USB 2 driver does not load when you use the driver cd supplied.
Right click the unknown dev and select update driver with the cd in.
    Should resolve the issue.

Checked device manager and everything is installed. Even tried upgrading the driver on em off the CD and off the files I downloaded, still nothing. Doesnt make a lot of sense really.

try installing the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers, might solve the issue, did for me on my VIA based board, way back when.

ok first off, VIA suck....I've had so much trouble with them in the past

Anyway, windows may have automatically installed the motherboard USB drivers for you and installed its own crappy drivers (happened to me). Just be sure to search that motherboard cd for usb drivers and install those in place of the windows default.

I enabled USB 2 in the bios and downloaded and installed any updates i could find. and still nothing

I assume you have XP SP2, yeah?

Have you checked the driver provider in Dev Mgr?

    EDIT:
Sorry just re-read your original post.
You mention that you put a new board and CPU in you system. I assume from what you are saying that you kept the old OS and did not do a fresh install.
If the new board has a different chipset to the original then you may well see problems like this unless you clean the old driver files etc.
    Is this the case?
Have you tried removing all the USB devices from Dev Mgr and reinstalling them by pointing to the new driver CD?

Does your case have any usb ports on it ?

If so connect the cables to your motherboard, and try them.

Also, have you tried other usb devices like a memory key or a usb mouse / keyboard. or a printer or anything else you can think of.

If none of them work, maybe the board is faulty.

Have you installed the latest via 4in1 drivers ?

Alot of options to why this is happening tbh. But lets eliminate the above ones first ebfore we delve any deeper.

Done a fresh XP install and have tried other USB devices yeah. Im gonna uninstall the usb ports and reinstall em tonight. Its annoying cause i use my zen as a portable hard disk and with usb 1 its so slow to transfer. Have usb ports on the case yeah, will try them tonight and see.

Tried everything at this stage. uninstalled all the ports and reinstalled them. same thing. hooked up the front ports on the case and they dont seem to be working at all! Driving me ****ing mad!
