Traveling in Middle East, specifically Syria

Hi, I am planning a trip to Syria with my Palestinian boyfriend to visit his mother and family there. I am a little concerned about our safety during the visit. I know the Israelies like to take pot shots at the camps now and again.
We would most likely be staying in Domascus but visiting the refugee camps.
I was wondering where I would get up to date reliable information on traveling in the region. I have checked out the different government websites but they offer little info.

(My boyfriends idea of 'safe' and my idea of safe are very different)

    Any help welcome!

A work colleague travelled to Syria and Lebanon last year. He really enjoyed it - said people were very friendly. Nice weather, inexpensive and happy to see tourists as they are in short supply.

I would have thought travelling with someone whos more or less at home there would leave you with the knowledge to have a very safe trip. In fact, it must be an opportunity - you'll get a better insight into the place than most.

Having visited a couple of countries on the 'do not visit' list in the last couple of years, I wouldnt be inclined to be put off by bad press anymore. Instead, use your own commonsense and all will be ok.

Hi there is no problem with Syria at all, I am planning to go to meet a friend who lives there next year. It is supposed to me an amazing place with historical sites and markets and bazaars that take you back in time. The people are lovely and the food is good. You would be more at risk in Belfast !!!

So go and enjoy and have a real experience. Just use common sense and keep your passport safe and money etc... you will be with your boyfriend and I presume he speaks Arabic so just stay with him and his family all the time.

I was there in 2005. One of my favourite countries, however make sure there is no stamp from Israel (or occupied Palestine as they call it) in your passport or you won't be allowed in.
I had to send off to London for a visa before leaving as I remember.
