Ahh Phantom, I did miss you.
A reason to turn the radio back on again

'bout bloody time too, any station that takes that much shìt to get on the air is gonna be around for a while.

Glad to get another convert. :) In seven years since I first heard of Phantom, its the one Irish station I hoped would come good. Its fantastic to hear them on-air, full-time and legal.

Is the webstream working, as it won't connect for me :(

I hope it is only a temporary technical hitch. I noticed that in UK some
of the local (non Beeb) stations are going to be granted licenses with
some small print which prevents them from having web streams on
account of their local remit. Sounds very backward and silly to me.

It was working fine at the time of my last post but I can't get it to work today and other streams (Newstalk) are working fine on my machine :( Finally find a station playing some really good non-run-of-the-mill music and now I can't connect...better do some work I suppose :D

Demand is killing the stream, apparently.

Well I supose that's a good sign in some ways :) Hope the advertisers are made aware that demand is very high (not that the stream is down ;)) and pump more money into the station.

Phantom have always been a class act! I'm just realising how much I missed them. My iPod has had a much deserved rest since Tuesday. I hope they keep going into the future as they've started now. I think they're the perfect radio station and it just shows how shameful other stations are with the amount of needles banter they have in the mornings! Rock on Sinister Pete :D

6 months and commercial pressure will have it sounding like every other boring station in Dublin. Welcome to commercial bliss Phantom, I hope the fight was worth it.

Jaysus Zen, Glad you can look into the future with such certainty. Ive been given a tip on a horse called "Zen is unneccessarily cynical and pessimistic" in the 4.40 at Leopardstown this weekend. You think he's worth 20 quid each way?

I admire Phantom's fight and spirit but they are now dependent on commercial people for their existence - this means they must appeal to as wide audience as possible. Ok maybe 9 months after which people will feel they MUST be loyal in order to listen.

I think you may misunderstand Phantom and what they promised in the licence application. They aren't planning for mass movements away from the established stations, I think its 2% in the JNLR's. They are going to try for a low cost model, and are not going for all "teeney bobbers" and hair-dressers*.

The track record is there with Lite FM/Q102 and Dublin's Country/Mix, but I am convinced that Phantom will not go this way.

    * no offence to either group, there is still 98FM.

After hearing of Phantom FM before and seeing all the ads on buses I decided to tune in yesterday. I'm still listening, it's a great station. Finally I have a use for my radio other than a door stopper!

As someone who is at the upper end (or maybe beyond! ) of their target age group, it is refreshing to hear Phantom. They have an adventurous music policy, and a very clever music mix. They throw in the odd classic along with all the new music. Then on the weekday evenings, Phantom caters for the more specialist niches within their niches, if you get me. For example, heavy metal on a Monday evening and Goth/Industrial rock on a Wednesday evening.

In other words, I am being educated during the day in my music, whilst been thrown a few morsals of more recognoisable tunes from the past, to keep my interest! And, the harder stuff is left for the evenings!

But part of the attraction for me is the novelty of a station with people who are passionate about their music, no matter when you switch on! That is such a contrast with, well, any other radio station, with the possible exception of Lyric FM. And they practically always tell you what they just played - how many times have you heard a half-decent song (or even quarter-decent song!) played on other stations and the deejay doesn't name-check it? And because it is obviously not a drudge for the broadcasters, this puts them at their ease and it comes across to the listener.

Word of advice: From anecdotal evidence, there appears to be many people, especially in the over 40's, who still are not aware of Phantom. (And neither are the shop assistants or hairdressers it seems - but thats another story!)
I think there are a no. of people out there, who just because they have got a bit older, don't stop listening to rock music and suddenly start listening to middle of the road music! So, maybe more marketing is required to grab peoples' attention. Not everybody is a subscriber to radio boards or a radio annorak.

Keep your eyes peeled for bus stop adverts and the like :) granted they're not as in your face and omnipresent as the likes of today fm or 2fm but I'm glad to see the ads out there.
    Meantime spread the word!

Thats a little cynical don't you think? In order for Phantom to guarantee some form of survival, it needed to get a licence. In order to get a licence it had to pay for the application, the licence itself, the defense of its granting of that licence. Then the equipment, studios, planning had to be paid for. Finally add in completely new departments such as sales, advertising, news, traffic, etc - not to mention payments to staff and rights organisations.

Do you expect people to pay for all that and not get any return?

What I think you might be afraid of is the likes of Denis O'Brien, UTV, Scottish media, etc who are broadcasting businesses driven by shareholders, and who strive to find the most popular programming, the blandest presentation, the most gimmicky promotions to continually hold high listenership, the backhands from the wider industry intent on feeding people what they want.

The people behind those stations do not have a music philosophy, an ambition to enlighten their listeners, a belief in didintermediating the music business, they don't have a sense of niche audience.

The difference with Phantom is that they are not seeking a mass audience - they are built to make money at 2% market share. The team behind it have been with the station through the pirate years, and know the culture, know the philosophy, know the ambition, know the vision. What's more, they have put their money into ensuring it can last at least 10 years.

Would love to be able to listen to Phantom down in the midlands but doubt it's gonna happen anytime soon. Used to love it when I was living up in Dublin.
    Hope they do well.
