Hi all, i hope i'm not putting this in the wrong section. Basically i have been offered a permanent contract in a new role at my current place of work. I had come here through a work placement from College 2 and a half yrs back when i was only supposed to stay a few months. My contract was due to expire soon enough (I was always kept on 6 month contracts and at the end etc they'd just renew it after asking if i wanted to stay. That a Full Time Temp Contract right?) Now ive been offered 3 yrs or so and have been asked what salary i would like so that we can negotiate it. I was on about 22,000 a year before this so i don't know what to ask for now? What would be a reasonable wage to ask for. Id rather not put the job title here for fear employer happens to frequent boards.ie ;) but if anyone wants to PM that would be cool. I'm lost as i cant find the same job advertised anywhere to get a reference and i don't a) want to aim too low, and b) go waaay overboard and seem like a fool

    Could anyone help? Thanks
    PJ

Ask them what they think you are worth to them. That is, what salary would they pay you to make you stay.

Thanks for the reply, yeah i plan on asking along those lines first rather than putting a figure put there

Its very hard to figure out what a good salary for your position would be if the title of the job is not specified. If you go to goolge and search for hudson 2006 salary report it should be a good indication of what your min, average or max salary should be.

Well general Salary negotiations (on average) increase between 10-15% on a yearly basis. Working on that principle you'd look for an additional 2-3k on your salary. Within reason.
It really depends on when your next salary increase would be due. If it increases every year, if work load increases with gained experience etc etc.
The best way is to assess salaries is to look to similar markets, industries or roles. Take your day to day tasks and look at salaries of jobs that contain similar roles ie Admin duties, project managemnet duties.
Average graduate earnings are now betweem 24-26k if that also helps to shed any light on it for you.
At the end of the day go with a reasonably fair but slightly higher salary than you'd expect. They won't want to loose you and will negotiate the price if they feel its too high. If its a figure they can match then happy days for you! Be as honest as you can with your boss, tell him you;ve done a bit of reasearch, feel the salry is justified but at the same time you enjoy working for the company and hope that you can resolve the issue in a fair manner. If you've a good boss they'll make sure it all runs smoothly.

Youve graduated from college, have been working for the company 2.5 years and are still on 22k? What am I missing?

Have a look at the jobsites and see what the usual pay scale is for your job and level. Then add 30% for your experience.

Go in for the kill and ask for 27k, its not that much of an increase and see what they say. Apart from that I have no idea what to suggest without knowing what kind of work you do.
