recently i've noticed that the dvd drive icons on my computer have vanished & i've no way of using the drives via either selection or auto play i suspect it's a virus but my anti virus software picks nothing up & system restore doesn't help in bringing them back. the disc trays still open but nothing happens when i insert a disc anyone any ideas how i might try & fix this problem?

Is the DVD drive showing up under Device Manager in the System applet in Control Panel?

Ok, is there any lights flickering when you put in a CD or when the computer starts up?

Nero (particularly Nero 7) has been known to do this. If you have it, uninstall and reboot.
Other burning/DVD playing software may also be the culprit.

Try this first before uninstalling any software.

open up the case, And check the power and ide cables connected to the motherboard, and the dvd drives. Just unplug them, and plug them back in.

As the cables could have come loose.

Is there an indication of power, lights showing on the drive? Is it showing up in the BIOS menu (DEL, F10 key, whatever it is at startup) where it gives you your system information?

You might want to give this a read but if there is ANY part of it you dont understand then dont go near it. Mess with the registry when you dont know what your doing and your computer may never start again.

    You have been warned
