Impressive. This is some of the hardest sh1t a human being can do. Have you been trying for long Colm? and i presume you used false grip?

*edit- where is MuscleForge cant seem to find it on yon interweb

It was my first attempt, really I can't see what the fuss was all about. :D I don't understand what you mean by false grip, although The Shane did show me how to grip the rings for the desired effect.

I think everyone should start a thread on this board when they do their first muscle up. Boo-Yah!

I can do them on bars but I've never gotten to try them on rings. So Zen, when are you going to finish the move and do a handstand? I'm only asking by way of motivation.

    GO YOU!

    Peace

I pull up on goalposts, so no amount of grip variation is going to get me beyond the humble pull-up... but then again, I could be the first!

I was a goal of mine to be able to do a Muscle Up by March 07 so now that I've trumped that I want to able to do a set of 5 and the super Muscle Up with the handstand part.

Rubbish dude, go for the false grip that everyone is talking about, basically pull up without wrapping your thumbs, do it explosively, with a kip lets say, then imagine you are going for a clean as your shoulders approach the bar.

It's a total bitch, a little more complex that on rings etc but possible.

As for the muscle up itself, it's kinda just been idolised by people because it's complex, yet if you look at ever a very junior level gymnast it's a movement they can do all day? Now gymnasts scare the hell out of me with the stuff they can do!!!

Well done Colm, it's a great acheivement for someone with no gymnastics background!!!! :)

Dragan BANNED for dissing the Muscle Up! We've made it a god here and a god it will stay!

Gymnasts are cool. I wish I'd done that instead of Kenpo.

tee hee hee :) The scariest thing i ever saw was my mate Steve from Washington doing Muscle Ups for sets on rings, then he would finish up each set with an Iron Cross....proper scary strenght right there.

I think my view of Muscle Ups has been tainted by hanging around with two college level gymnasts from the states for 2 years in college?

I wouldn't mind seeing a gymnasts try there hand at MMA training? Crazy strenght, amazing balance, excellent conditioning. In college the three of us would train Creco Roman with another mate of ours and the two guys were pretty damn good at it! It seems to be the balance issue that helped them the most?

My goal is to do a muscle up at my current weight of 250 pounds, which would be sweet as hell. :)

bloody hell....what an exercise....like a pull up, with a chest dip on top.

They have an gym in NYC Monkey Bar gym or something. that specialises in all this stuff.

    Two things...

Thing the first: Muscle Forge is the greatest name for a gym ever!

Thing the second: I have as of now set my self the task of some day completing a muscle up.

Oh the times you wish you had a camera. I was in the park this morning, and after some chiding above by Dragan, I said, well hey, maybe its possible to muscle up on goalposts. It was 8am, it was dewy. I pulled up, I failed. I said, aha, maybe I'll use a kipping pull up on account of the circumference of the bar. I failed- I couldn't grip. So being ingenius, I changed my grip as I hung so that my wrists were now almost on top of the crossbar. This felt better, time for a heave-ho. I kipped up, my hands were too far on the other side of the bar, I slipped forward, I fell, my armpits hit the bar, this was sore but it broke the next impact which was on my chin, I fell on my ass into the mud. Many, many commuters witnessed this. I raised my fist at them and shouted "laugh away, but I am forging extreme fitness", they looked away in shame. All of this really happened except for the last bit.

Anyway, my jaw is sore but its strengthened my resolve to make my "side entrance gym" beside my house. I'm off to B&Q...

Roper, that is the funniest thing that I have ever read on the internet.

The first time I did a muscle up, I was so happy. I started shouting and calling for people to come. Now my dear sweet mother could only see my legs dangling from the tree that I hung my rings from and with my father in tow ran out with knife in hand to cut me down.... She to this day does not see the funny side of this.

I can verify that Colm did in fact do two muscle ups, the first one all will power and grit, the second one a much smoother technique.

Muscle ups on bars are harder - not least because my ceiling gets in the way. Rings let the hands rotate and allow a fuller use of triceps and chest coupled with a better line for the centre of gravity to travel along.

Certain goals in fitness need to be universally accepted. Muscle ups should be one of them, bodyweight:weight exercises etc.

Muscle Forge will make it happen.

Yeah but the important thing is that you tried....AND had a really cool story to pass on to the rest of us....sounds to me like the only thing stopping you nailing a muscle up is the thick post you have to use???
