    Hi
Was thinking about this route to do. Fly to NYC, drive to Vegas (how long? Visable?) On to Grand Canyon and then drive to LA and fly homw from there. Anyone does anything similar to this? Any tips? Especially about the driving from NYC to Vegas bit...

    Cheers

You need to tell us how many will be driving as that will impact on the figures. How long per day are you prepared to sit in the car travelling.

Via Michlen trip calculator indicates a distance of 4069km and a driving time of 37 hours. You are looking at 4 and a half days if you do 8 hours a day. Its all interstate highway and pretty boring tbh. Loads of motels along the way to pit stop for the night in.

    Good luck with the trip.

cheers Bond. There's 2 of us going by the way. We've decided to fly from NYC to Vegas, get a car there and drive to San Fran. Maybe down to LA from there. Any idea of drive from Fran to LA? Scenery, length etc?

Any idea of prices on hire car for a 23 year old? 3 year full clean license. Can't seem to find anyone who can tell me

When you're hiring a car, age doesn't matter once you're over 21 with a full licence for over a year.

I've never done this, but I believe the scenery if one drives along the coast from SF to LA is amazing and takes in some nice towns along the way too.

AFAIR, there is a surcharge for under 25's when renting a car (didn't apply to me, but I do recall hearing that somewhere).

Edit: Just checked Hertz.com and that is in fact the case.

The more direct route is from Las Vegas to LA, better roads that way. I've done San Francisco to LA, best option is to go the coast road (the 1, not the 101) - incredible scenery. It took us around 8 hours with the occasional stop off.

I did the trip from LA to SF last year and then on to Vegas. SF to Vegas is 8-9 hours, scenery not the best but drive was easy and view of Vegas from about 20 miles away accross the desert was great.

Grand Canyon is about a 5 hour drive from Vegas. My suggestion if you can afford it is helicopter trip from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. About 150 USD per person but awesome and only an hour each way trip.

On the way from SF to LA try and spend a night in Carmel. Its a lovely place. Close to Carmel is the "17 mile drive" Costs 8 dollars for a car to enter this area but well worth it , bring a picnic as it is the most beautiful stretch of the Pacific Coast and also has Pebble Beach Golf Club in there. Also Monterrey worth a visit. (near to Carmel)

Getting nearer to LA small Dutch town called Solvang well worth a few hours visit.
2 Hours drive south of LA is San Diego , again well worth a visit if you have a night to spare

Is that the place where Clint Eastwood was/is Mayor?

No, that would be East Clintwood.

    Ahem, sorry.

Yes, Carmel was where he is/was mayor.
