    Hi all,

As the title suggests this is my first build.

If your not a big gamer, go for a 7600gt. Its the best value for money graphics card out there at the moment & will play any modern game out there at the moment. Here: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=318798 or a cheaper option would be a 7600gs, slightly slower. Here: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=319351

As regards a psu, its better not to skimp as it will save you in the long run & also if you go for a 500/600w it will allow for any upgrades or extra hd's you add in future. Go for a good reputable brand ie. Ocz, Seasonic, Antec, Enermax or Fortron. Here: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=314763
or the 600w isn't much more expensive: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=324468

    Thanks for the reply Pog.

Also forgot to ask about decent Heatsink Fan to replace the Stock Fan on the Core Duo.

I'm not big into OCing but I would like a quiter HSF.

Any recommends. I've heard good things about Zalman.

Zalman is good, but expensive. I sold mine on adverts last week, so ya missed out m8 :p

If you shopping on Komplett, get this: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=310134. Better price than the zalman & if you not c'in should be quiet enough.
This is a great cooler at a good price, but not on komplett, 2nd from bottom: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Arctic_Cooling_CPU_Coolers.html

Ask if they can give you a 2x1Gb DDR2 kit instead of getting 2 2x512Mb kits. Using 4 sticks of ram means more work for the mem controller, and can restrict the overclocking potential.
Also, with a 2Gb kit you have the option to add another 2Gb next year when Vista arrives.

    Good Point. I overlooked that.

    I'll look into it.

Also does anyone know if the GFX that Pog suggested will run the Fancy New Vista Graphics.

    It should be fine
Note: Vista is coming out with a new version of DirectX (10), and thusly, all new graphics cards will implement the features that has. There's no DX10 cards out yet (well I think the Geforce 8800 isn't too far away, but that's really high end??)
I'm waiting for these to appear and be refined before updrading (not in a hurry).

Also, what's with all this recommending high watt PSUs?
I'd say 400W is the most any non-oc'ed, singly GPU, mid-range PC needs! :o
Save a bit of money and get 400-500W maybe.

    Thanks for the info Niblets.

wrt to the PSU; I may consider OCing in the future so I'd rather have the option there.

    my personal opinion:D

i was going to get a new desktop as well ,but after they annouced the news of Vista is going to 'seduce' us by introducing the long waiting DirectX10,i decided to wait for few months(maybe half year ?).

the trends of the pc market will be a mess/a big change from this Xmas on.the hardwares you get now maybe worth nothing after half year, especially your graphic card, and we also dont really know how will the vista doing in the DUO trends processor now...i just think that,it is too risky to get a pc now...prices of the hardwares now may drop crazily after half year...who knows?

if you got no interest to the vista at all, sure there is no problem of buying a pc now.just a reminder, and that's all my own opinion:D

getting a psu??i think that any standard psu will do well, just get the average price 1:p mine 1 comes with the case(iCute),work perfectly all these years(3 years now).

some words for the hard drive,if you are looking for a very quiet and thermally advantaged high capacity drive(320gb,i suppose?) then go for the Western. The drive offered very good game play performance and was able to make a strong showing in the general business application benchmarks. If you are looking for a drive that offers slightly better overall performance and excels in most desktop and multimedia applications while offering competitive acoustics then i would recommend Seagate ;) suit your self, especially they have the same price in that website.i remember i have seen a comparasion statistic of these two lately release hard drive~

well, overall,i say,you have already got a really very good pc from the list you showed;) jealous~

p/s:i love Lite-on brand cdrom since my Sony brand DVDcombo pissed me off seriously few years ago.i would recommend that.

DX10/vista is not worth waiting for.

    (1) Has minimal support for multicore CPUs.

    (2) is at present 10-15% slower than XP in current games.

    (3) Vista only allows one motherboard change, i.e. after this you buy another copy of Vista.

    (4) There will be sod all DX10 games out, even the ones out will still support DX9 and will still look fantastic under DX9.

    (5) Prob won't be until the 2nd or 3rd gen DX10 cards that a DX10 will actually be worth getting: games are still mostly for the next while, be DX9 only games.

    (6) As with all MS OSs, Vista will be buggy as hell on release and best to leave buying it for at least a year if not two after release.

As long as you buy mid range and upgrade slowly over time to better parts when they fall in price, you don't get stung.

Buy good hardrives, ram, case, PSU and, monitor and motherboard. Everything else is upgradeable/expendable.

Vista is just not worth waiting for full stop. No point getting it until it is manditory to play games.

ALWAYS get a good PSU. Cheap ones are not worth the heartache, and a good one can be still used for the next build/upgrade.

i never like to get a vista though:p just wishing that hardwares prices will drop so that will save me a bundle of fortune:Di talk about vista just because quazzy seems interest in vista;)

but thanks for your opinion/small lesson!!i never go to take a look of those 'real' issue that vista can bring!!only know that there must be so many bugs/problems waiting vista(look back for XP:D ),pay lots of money)both softwares and hardwares) and get a pandora box.....definitely not worth to experience it at least after 1 year(especially for me this kinda student:o )

anyway,i will still wait till next year for my pc~;)i actually also thinking of OSX now...emm...can run Vista....sounds tasty...

p/s:i do have some friends in Malaysia, they sell really cheap hardwares!!thats the real reason that i wouldnt mind to wait:D

    Vista = pointless.

My advice on a PSU would be the Seasonic S12 500W.

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=314763

Has all the power and connections you'll ever need and is a quiet, reliable piece of kit. The 500W model has an advantage over the 430W because it has a PCI-Express power connector, that will save you two molexes and lessen the case clutter. You might also need the extra juice if you change/add components in the future.

    Hey Sean,

    Thanks for the input.

I'm not goin to be using Vista for a very long time but I just wanted to know if the GFX card would be able to run it.

I'll update here when I've got the order sorted

    Thanks again,
