My laptop's hard disk is failing after 7 years almost 24 hours a day use. I'm away from my office and the installation disks / cds for my programs. I havee intended buying a new laptop for a while now and whilst I can transfer xls and doc files etc to cds, how can I transfer the programs I have eg Office, etc? What about the registry. I cannot afford to lose any data nor functionality.

I dont wish to have my old hard disk as an usb add-on disk or similar as it will eventually fail.

Any tips or "how to do it in 10 easy to follow steps" very much appreciated.

    Regards

    HPMan

Most applications wont transfer, and trying to move registy hives is guaranteed to cause you headaches.

You need cloning software such as acronis True image and use Microsofts tool called sysprep. First you will need to remove appliciations and drivers that are specific to your old laptop''s hardware. When done you will also need to reactivate windows. You could also image the drive and run an "in place" or repair install but this is a half assed way TBH.

Unless you really know what you are doing, you should reinstall the apps and copy the documents over from the old machine.
