    Here's my problem.

Permissions Error when using word 2003 with USB Flash Drive
In the past I haven't had issues with saving a word 2003 document from my computer to a usb flash drive. However, and mysteriously, I've encountered a permissions error which prevents me from saving a save as word 2003 document from my computer's hard drive to my usb flash drive. The error message reads as follows: Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. My original flash drive is a PNY 1GB. I purchased a new flash drive in an effort to rectify the problem, but the problem continues to exist. Everything else saves fine to the pen drive. The problem only occurs when I try to save a Word.doc.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to solve this? Thanks,

Can you do it with wordpad. Its a specific doc, or any doc's?

    Just Word doc's.

I don't want to have to uninstall & reinstall word if there is a workaround.

Can you do it in wordpad?

I don't think it will help in this case but do a search for normal.dot and delete all instances of it. This will lose any customisations you've made to toolbars and macros unless you've saved them elsewhere.

Why not do a reinstall? Only take 5 mines and is most likely to fix it.

I think a reinstall will be done. As you said, it more then likely will sort it & save a whole load of hassle.

I'm just one of those "Need to know" people. :D

I much prefer to find out what caused the problem in the first place.

    A glutton for punishment...

can you copy the file if NOT in word ?

right click the file and properties check it's not readonly or open
you only need to check security if you have re-formatted the USB as NTFS

In that case use that while you are figuring out word. Personally I wouldn't waste your time figuring out the problem unless it happens on a regular basis. Reinstalling is just quicker and solves the majority of issues.

I reinstalled & all is well again.

Thanks to all for the input.

If anyone else reads this & has any thoughts as to what the problem may have been, please post.

Word has a lot of odd problems which tend to more complex than you'd expect for a "WP" level application. It collapses under its own complexity.
