    what browser are you using?

In DCU we have to change the broswer proxy settings when at home or in college.
    Minor pain in the ass.

But it seems in TCD the IT idiots dont explain a thing to the students and
leave them with no internet at home, just like in DCU.

S.O.B's uninstalled my anti-virus and firewall without asking and installed their
AV and Firewall. I was not impressed and eventually told them to install back my
    old stuff.

This thread might have to be moved to more of a techy forum. Hopefully not.

Your browser is Internet Explorer (IE for short)?

Open it up. At the top of the window there should be "Tools". Click on it. Then go to "Options".

Now a small window will open with lots of tabs at the top. Click on the "Connections" tab. Its the 5th one over.

At the bottom of this tab page you will see "LAN Settings". Click on it.

A new window will open up. Can you tell me what boxes are ticked and also
    what is in the boxes.

This is what mine looks like. Your might have different boxes ticked and different URLs. So just let me know what yours looks like.

Looks like your offline and I have to go out for a few hours.

If you need your wireless desperately then you can try the following.

In the pic below you will see my proxy settings. If you're "use automatic config
script" is ticked and you have some sort of address in it then do the following.

    Tick "Auto Detect Settings"
    Untick "use automatic config script"
Untick "Use proxy server for you LAN"

Now your wireless should connect providing your problem is with your proxy settings.

    changingproxy

    PM me for the pic

edit: These images will be gone or edited by the end of today. Im not sure if I should be showing the "public" DCUs proxy settings.
Mod: Leave it be for a few hours if this is against some rule or such , please :)

The proxy server settings shouldn't be an issue when picking up wireless at home. More important will are the settings on the wireless router and on the laptop.

First of all what broadband and what wireless are you using? Is the wireless protected?

Try right-clicking on the wireless icon in the taskbar (next to the clock, bottom right) and open up available wireless connections. If you're wireless isn't in the list try refreshing it. Select the wireless that you have at home. If it's protected it should ask you for a WEP key, this should be available with the router (on eircom it's available in when you open a browser on a machine connected to the router by a cable), it's a long sequence of numbers and letters and you'll need to enter it twice. Once that's done you should automatically connect from then on.

The proxy settings won't stop you accessing the internet, they will just require you to log on when you do. This will give you access to most of the same facilities that you get when you log-on in college (library etc.).

I'm sorry if I didn't give exactly the right names for things in the second paragraph, but you should be able to work it out. I'm doing it from memory of my old Dell, macs are so much handier!

OK, so I've arrived at home now and have just tried connecting my wireless network. To get it to work I did have to turn off the proxy settings in the browser. Basically you need to set your computer to connect directly to the internet. In both firefox and internet explorer this can be done through Tools -> Options and opening the connection settings. In firefox, you need to click on Direct connection to the Internet (leave the proxy setting stuff as it is, you can just click that setting again when you go back to college). In internet explorer it should be something similar. Try that and let us know how it goes.
